BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
KAVS/Lancaster (Part-Time), KISV/Bakersfield (Middays/Mixshow DJ), KSEQ/Fresno (APD/MD/Mornings), KVEG/Las Vegas (Mornings/Imaging Director), KWWV/San Luis Obispo (PD/Mornings)
1. You may be the reigning champion of number of current radio gigs. In addition to being PD at KWWV, please list your current jobs?
Got a few minutes? I'm the OM for our 4 station San Luis Obispo cluster, as well as PD at KWWV (WiLD 106) and Adult Hits KXTZ (95.3 The Beach). Also, doing a semi syndicated morning show that originates from KWWV and is now heard on Top 40's KCDU Monterey/Salinas, CA (101.7 The Beach), KZBD Spokane, WA (105.7 Now FM), & KQPT Chico, CA (Now 107.5 & 107.9).
2. Earlier in your radio career you moved around some but you seem to have settled in nicely in San Luis Obispo. Why the change from traveling man to setting some roots in SLO?
San Luis Obispo, Ca is a BEAUTIFUL city! I LOVE it here. The lifestyle, the weather, the atmosphere... it's paradise. Also, I hear so many radio people say they, "don't feel appreciated at work"... I honestly DO feel appreciated here. I feel like I'm happy to work for this company, and they're happy I work for them. It's a good feeling. Our CEO Jim Shea is a "radio guy" who's done EVERYTHING from On-Air, to Programming to Sales... and I honestly look forward to seeing him when he comes to town. (Let's hope he reads this)
3. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A man. I honestly told the doctor that when he asked me as a kid. But other than that, I've wanted to do radio for as far back as I can remember.... I'm Livin' the Dream!
4. What's the most difficult part of doing morning shows for so many different markets?
The time. It takes A LOT of time. I know it'll get easier the more I do it, but it's VERY time consuming. This isn't a syndicated show. It's more like a voice tracked morning show with some generic content, but surrounded by local content for each station. I am thankful to everyone involved in the process for believing in me, and helping me improve the show... Jim Shea, Mike Skot, Tommy Del Rio and Scott Michaels... it's only gonna get better (or fail miserably, one or the other).
5. What's rather unique about San Luis Obispo relative to other California small markets?
Demographically it's the LEAST Hispanic market I've ever worked in. Which took some time adjusting to coming from Vegas, Fresno or Bakersfield... which really just means... there AREN'T a lot of good Mexican restaurants here. I did find one though... shouts to Pancho's in SLO.
6. What's your favorite song on the KWWV right now?
So hard to pick just one... I'm VERY happy with the direction the format has taken lately. If I gotta pick one... Daft Punk- Get Lucky. I've been a huge fan of theirs since I was DJing house parties back in the 90's. Glad to hear them back with such GOOD music, and it's great to hear Pharrell back on the radio... he was missed.
7. Which other PDs do you network with?
I'm very happy that Tommy Del Rio (who chose not to fire me for many years at KSEQ in Fresno) is working for our company now as PD of KCDU in Monterey / Salinas... I've been picking his brain / stealing his ideas a lot lately. And for anyone I'm not networking with... reach out anytime guys! I love radio, and talking about it.
8. It's not like you have much but what do you like to do in your spare time?
I'm a homebody... a pizza, ice cream and a DVD at home are heaven to me. It's nice living 5 minutes from the ocean too.
9. Give up a few of your secrets to time management?
I wish someone would give me their secrets. Do what you gotta do, get it done and move on... and no business calls on the weekend please... that's MY TIME. Unless the building is on fire or the station is off the air... it CAN wait until Monday.
10. Hypothetical question...If you were getting married in two months and you could have any group or singer perform at your reception, who would you choose?
Answering this question will give away my age. But it would either be Keith Sweat or Stevie B. Those 2 artists have MORE songs that I know every word to, then anyone else I can think of.
Bonus Questions
Beer and pizza or sushi and sake?
Sushi & sake for sure... I'm watching my weight.
Who is your favorite personality on air today?
If it's mornings... I gotta say JV (KYLD San Francisco)... if I wasn't "in radio" anymore, I would personally listen to his morning show for the entertainment value. In afternoons... St. John (KMVQ San Francisco). The guy is just so entertaining, compelling, witty and quick on the air... yet his show is still all about the music.
