1. What got you into radio?
Funny you asked that... I came in as a special guest on the morning show (Hip Hop Coffee Shop) to talk about my media company and half way through the interview, Bill Baker asked me had I ever thought about doing radio! I laughed and said, "Well, you know I have an internet radio show via BlogTalkRadio..." -- I had been doing that seasonally for approximately 2 years strictly as a tribute to independent artists and entrepreneurs, but never anything major like a FM station. However, I am always willing to try new things as it pertains to expanding my brand, so the thought of me being on mainstream radio, hosting the #1 morning show on Delmarva, 6 days a week and to be on TV doing the entertainment report for 47 ABC news was an absolutely amazing opportunity.
2. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I always had two dreams... I wanted to be a famous singer/actor of course! Nevertheless, I always was told to have a plan B, so I also wanted to be a FBI profiler or to diagnose behaviors in some capacity. I actually went to school and have obtained three college degrees to further my knowledge in the fields of Human Services (Associates), Behavioral Science (Bachelors) and Public Administration (Masters). Needless to say, if none of this entertainment stuff works out I will definitely utilize my education for sure!!
3. Before starting at OC104, you had a wealth of experience in entertainment and media. How does that experience help you in co-hosting the morning show?
My prior experience has helped out a lot with my position on the morning show!! I've been able to bring exclusive interviews as well industry insight and information that most people wouldn't have access to right to the Eastern Shore. However, I only have one goal and that is to use my experiences, knowledge and connections to enlighten those who may have dreams of entering the world of entertainment. My hopes are to encourage those to follow their dreams and show them that it's not impossible to live your dreams. That is, ONLY if you are willing to do the work, stay focused and be consistent.
4. Do you still do any singing?
Unfortunately not at the moment. Once I understood the way the business of entertainment works and the position that an artist holds verses an executive, I kindly declined the idea of being an artist when I realized I had so much more than that to offer to this industry.
5. What would probably surprise people the most about Ocean City?
It's so divided. I hope that will one day change.
6. What's your favorite song on the station right now?
New Flame by Chris Brown and Latch by Disclosure!!!
7. If you weren't in radio and music, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
I'd most definitely be diagnosing patients in somebody's clinical office and/or prison!!
8. What do you like to do in your spare time?
Spare time??? What's that?!? Being Shay Star is a 24 hour a day task... When I leave the station I have to make sure ShayStar.com is updated and promoted daily. I travel all around the U.S. covering events, networking and conducting interviews. However, it's a must that I do make time to spend with my child. He is the reason I go so hard!!
9. As we wrap up Summer and head into Fall, what would you like to do better as a programmer or as an air personality?
My main concern is ratings. So I'm always pushing the bar to see how we as a station can become bigger and better. More interviews, station events and definitely more community involvement on a local and digital level.
10. Hypothetical question...If you were getting married in two months and you could have any group or singer perform at your reception, who would you choose?
TGT of course!!!! I love Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank!!! If not one of them, ALL of them would be so awesome!! They've all been very supportive of the ShayStar.com brand and being that I came into this a singer, they were definitely artists that I looked up to!
If you had to eat one type of meal everyday for a month, what would it be?
Anything Caribbean or Spanish!!! I love rice, beans, chicken and plantains!! I could eat that EVERYDAY!!!!!
What's the secret to waking up very early for your show?
My father!!! LOL he starts calling and texting me around 4:30am EVERYDAY!!! My Daddy is my everything! Don't know where I'd be without him!!
