BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Started as intern at WDFX in 1988...First full time job was nights at WTWR in Monroe, MI. Co-hosted mornings at WSNX in Grand Rapids for a short time in the mid 90's, and was PD for Cumulus WWWM/Toledo for almost 10 years. Moved back to Detroit to work for CBS and ended up at Citadel WDVD as Production/Imaging Director, when Cumulus took over Citadel I was back in the Cumulus family and when the opportunity came up to head West, I grabbed it.
1. What got you into radio?
I've been an entertainer since I was a kid, and as a teen I wanted to be a rock star (who doesn't) and since I couldn't make a living making music, I thought maybe I can make a living playing music.
2. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a chef for a while as a kid, I love to cook. The creative part of creating dishes is the same thing I love about radio.
3. What was the biggest change in the move from Michigan to Southern California?
Cost of living, mainly housing which is about double. A positive is the weather, hello it's beautiful here and I barely dodged the worst winter in Michigan history last year as I left just before. Although I wouldn't mind a rainy day once in a while, and of course we could use it.
4. What has surprised you about living on the West Coast?
I guess there's a misconception that California people are "healthier" in the way they eat than let's say middle America...but that doesn't seem to be the case. I found it easier to eat healthy in Detroit if you can believe that. Although the year round farmers market in Ojai is a great place for produce every week.
5. What are some of the similarities you've found in working in California?
As Depeche Mode said People are People. Cultures may differ, languages may be different, politics may be different but everyone just wants to find a little joy, happiness, and break from the grind of daily life. So working in a business that can, at least in a small way, offer that to people whether they're in the Midwest or West Coast is awesome.
6. What's your favorite song on the station right now?
Kendrick Lamar - i. I loved this song at first listen.
7. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
Advertising campaigns maybe. I love coming up with ideas and concepts for things and if I couldn't do that in radio any longer I would attempt to migrate that over to Marketing and Advertising in some way....either that or I'll go be a line cook somewhere
8. What do you like to do in your spare time?
I'm a TV and movie buff....Walking Dead is a 'can't miss'.
9. If you could be on any TV reality show or game show, which would you want to be on?
I wish they still had Rock-N-Roll Jeopardy. I would have been so good on that, but I'd love to see if I could make it more than 24 hours on Naked and Afraid (hint...I couldn't)
10. You're a fan of movies. Got a handy Top 5 all-time?
That's a tough one since there's so many but here goes favorite first:
- The Matrix (original) questions reality and what constitutes reality...I find that fascinating.
- Star Wars Episodes I - VI (one long movie)
- Braveheart
- Peaceful Warrior
- Christmas Vacation (my most quoted probably...makes me laugh every time I see it)
Bonus Questions
If you had to eat one type of meal everyday for a month, what would it be?
Mexican
If you HAD to adopt a Los Angeles professional sports team, which would it be?
Trick question since there's no NFL team. Could I adopt the SF 49ers? If not that, then I'll grab the Clippers.
