BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
KARX/Amarillo 1992-1994, KQIZ/Amarillo 1995-1997, KNIN/Wichita Falls 1997, KQIZ/Amarillo 1997-2000, KKWD-KYIS/OKC 2000-present
1. What got you into radio?
I was in Houston in elementary school and loved listening to the radio. I would flip back and forth between Power 104 KRBE and 93Q and record the DJs, sweepers and intros on my boom box. Then rewind the cassettes and pretend my room was a studio. What a great Top 40 battle that was! My family moved to Amarillo, TX in '87 and I would listen to KQIZ and KAKS battle it out. I began to bug the hell out of the night jocks and beg them to let me intro song 7 on the countdown. Finally got that chance and completely fell in love with radio. In '92 my little sister made friends with a girl whose dad was starting a radio station in Amarillo and my parents mentioned to them that their son loved radio. I got in and began labeling carts, reels and CDs and worked my way up. That guy who started the station in Amarillo was Bill Lacy who helped launch the KATT here in OKC in 1976. The KATT is one of America's top Rock stations and in our cluster here! It's crazy how things work out. Thanks Bill for giving me a chance!
2. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
As a kid, I wanted to play professional football, but then as I caught the radio bug it was being on the air!
3. You were raised in Texas. Does that make you a Texan for life?
I think so. My wife is from Texas (and has the tattoo to prove it) my son was born in Texas and my mom, stepdad and brother still live there...but when it comes to Oklahoma vs Texas...I have to side with Oklahoma!
4. I know you love programming but haven't you also done sports broadcasting and public address duty?
I started about 5 years ago doing high school football play by play with KINB and WWLS. What a blast that is! Every week it's a different game and storyline. I truly enjoy broadcasting play by play and I'm working to get better at it. Recently, I got the job as the Oklahoma City Blue in arena PA gig. The Blue is the NBA D-League affiliate of our OKC Thunder. What fun this season was! Had the chance to see quite a few upcoming NBA stars like Seth Curry (Steph Curry's brother), Mitch McGary (current Thunder player) and more.
5. What would probably surprise most people about Oklahoma City?
The fact that Oklahoma is not the "WiLD West". Most people think it's farm fields and ranches but Oklahoma City is one of the fastest growing metros in the country. We have some great trendy locales like Bricktown and MidTown with cool bars, pubs and restaurants. So many people are moving downtown now, the builders can't keep up. The people here are so friendly it sometimes surprises others from out of state. It's what we call the Oklahoma Standard. Always helping others!
6. Oklahoma is pretty well known for its monster tornadoes. What's up with all of the moderate earthquakes? They can't be favorites of the chamber of commerce?
Oklahoma has surpassed California with earthquakes. Over 3500 in the last 5 years. Most under 2.5 but lately growing to 4.0's and bigger. I live in a "hot zone" and feel them quite frequently. We have numerous faults throughout the state and they have become alive lately. Many scientists agree that it's due to wastewater injections near fault lines from oil and gas drilling. Oil is big business here in Oklahoma so they're working on solutions to work around injecting near fault lines.
7. What do you like to do in your spare time?
In the spring, I like to chase storms. I'm the resident station meteorologist (without the diploma)...
8. Who would you like to see cast to play Cisco Kidd in a movie about your life?
Seth McFarlane...funny dude and I think the ladies like him!
9. If you had to eat one type of meal everyday for a month, what would it be?
Seafood...lobster specifically
10. Isn't your son following in your DJ footsteps?
It's crazy! My son has been mixing for the last 3 years. He has a mixshow weekly on WiLD and is performing at concerts and festivals. He's spun in Dallas and received some great feedback from Skrillex, Diplo, Tiesto and Dillon Francis. He's opening for the Life In Color tour in Tulsa this Friday!
I'm very proud of him as he's worked hard at this all himself while maintaining A's and B's in school and competing in track. He's a pole vaulter! If anyone is interested in checking out his work check out www.iamdjlimitless.com
Shameless plug!
