BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
WSNY-WVKO/Columbus, OH, WSYX-TVABC, Columbus, OH, National Black Programming Consortium, Columbus, OH, BET, Washington, DC, WHUR and WPGC 95.5FM, Washington, DC.
1. What got you into radio?
I was covering an event for a local newspaper, and I interviewed the Program Director of the radio station that was promoting the event. I ended up getting a job at the station (WSNYWVKO). I worked under Sam Nelson and Mike Anderson. Mike laid the foundation for my growth in radio. It remains my greatest learning experience, to date. It was incredible.
2. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a journalist. I majored in print journalism. I wanted to write and do investigative reporting.
3. You're from Washington D.C. Would it be fair to say that you grew up listening to WPGC?
That would be an obvious assumption, but not an accurate one lol. Coming up, I actually never listened to PGC...or WKYS! I was an old soul. I listened to WHUR and WOOK - OK100, both around the clock. I woke up with OK100 and literally went to sleep to WHUR's Quiet Storm.
4. Think back to walking through the doors of WPGC for the first time. Did it meet your expectations for the station?
Honestly, I had no specific expectations when I arrived at WPGC for the first time. And, as a result, it was absolutely perfect.
5. What would probably surprise most people about Washington D.C. as a place to live and work?
I'm not sure that others would be surprised, but I continued to be amazing about the degrees of separation! The older I get, the smaller DC gets!
6. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
I would have become a psychologist. I may as well be one part-time as much as I counsel my staff! I've always wanted travel abroad and do outreach too. There's still time.
7. What keeps you busy when you're not at the station?
The station.
8. If you could be on any TV reality show or game show, which would you want to be on?
Undercover Boss!
9. Who are the biggest celebrities in town? Politicians, journalists or athletes?
In terms of public notoriety, I'd have to say politicians. DC is now a very transient area. Athletes and journalists come and go at a pretty rapid rate. Politicians are a constant in our city, and with us being such a political hub, they're more widely known. Everybody knows Marion Barry (our former mayor) Muriel Bowser (our current mayor) and Rushern Baker (our P.G. County Executive), but not everyone knows the athletes, unless they're doing extremely well. And, there are only a handful of journalists here that the average person can name.
10. Music is such a part of our lives, emotionally. When you need to have your feelings picked up with a little music, what might you listen to?
Go Go kick-starts my mood so I'd have to say Chuck Brown and Rare Essence, and then I'd probably rock to Ghostface, and Kendrick Lamar. I'd listen to Erykah Badu for a little empowerment and Syreeta Wright and Santana if I need to smile. And, if I'm dragging and need a little push to get though the day, Donny Hathaway's more upbeat tunes i.e. Valdez In The Country and Flying Easy (both live) and live versions anything by D'Angelo!
Bonus Questions
If you had to eat one type of meal every day for a month, what would it be?
Starbucks - Venti Hazelnut Chi. I actually have it every day. It serves as breakfast, and the station is better for it.
