Fistful Of Mercy
Nov 15, 2010
Fistful Of Mercy - the special side project featuring Ben Harper, Joseph Arthur and Dhani Harrison - has been doing quite nicely at Triple A radio. The band formed in February 2010, when Arthur asked Harper to accompany him in the studio; Harper then asked Harrison, whom he had met at a skate park in Santa Monica, CA, to accompany them. Upon arriving at the Carriage House studio in Los Angeles' Silverlake neighborhood, the trio went on to write and record nine original acoustic songs. They worked at a fast pace, sharing vocal duties and handling most of the instruments themselves before enlisting session drummer Jim Keltner to overdub percussion.
The project harkens back to "supergroup" collaboration's of past such as Harrison's father's stint with The Traveling Wilburys. Fistful Of Mercy made their live debut in a performance for KCRW/Los Angeles' "Morning Becomes Eclectic" in August and they released their debut album "As I Call You Down" on October 5th via HOT Records.
Fistful Of Mercy had some important "friends" helping out for the launch of the new album, too!
First, an eBlast about the band was sent out to the Beatles database of over 84 million people, giving them information about the project and a taste of the music! Second, Starbucks launched their brand-new Starbucks Digital Network tied-in with their website and Wi-Fi network of over 6,700 locations. This new lifestyle/social network initiative will spotlight music, among other things, and Fistful Of Mercy was chosen as the inaugural music act to launch the network. The album has also been offered at a special rate at Amazon.com.
In a recent interview Harrison said of the experience, "It was one of those things where when the option came to play with Ben, it was a no-brainer. It seems to be more organic and more natural like it could actually stick together as a group rather than just being a collaboration. I could be in a group with these guys forever."
"While "Father's Son" climbs the Triple A airplay charts, several other tracks from the album are getting attention including "Fistful of Mercy," "With Whom You Belong," "Restore Me" and the title track.
Fistful Of Mercy is just wrapping up a tour in the U.S before they head over to Europe for a series of dates in December. They were featured on NPR's "All Things Considered" and did a live performance on NBC's "Parenthood." They also performed on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" the week of album release.
