BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Started out at a college station just north of Boston, then begin an internship at WFNX and from there -- I was hooked! I bounced around to various stations in Boston, Hartford, Providence, Springfield, IL, St. Louis, and now I have been in Denver for seven and I love it here!
1. What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
When I was a kid, I was into Madonna -- so KISS 108 in Boston or KS104 in Denver. The rocker in me didn't come out till later -- I guess I was a late bloomer.
2. What stands out the most from your first job in radio?
The hours...it was dark and the only people listening were the other 3rd shifters. Does anyone do overnights live anymore?
3. How has your job changed in the past year?
My job has changed a lot over the past year; I have added Music Director responsibilities for both KTCL and KBPI. It has been a lot of work and a lot of fun!
4. What are you most proud of since joining Clear Channel/Denver?
I am most proud of the responsibilities I have taken on and the success of the stations. It's a team effort and we all work really hard to create the best stations we can.
5. Describe KTCL's music meeting and the benchmarks for a song to make it into your Rate The Music survey?
We listen to EVERYTHING! The good, the bad, and the ugly. There really isn't a "benchmark" a song has to hit. Each song is judged individually.
The meetings are pretty casual; we sit around listen to the songs and score them. The top 4-5 songs will move on to RTM. If a song scores a 10 or better, but still doesn't make it to RTM we will bring it back to another meeting.
Once it goes to RTM, the listeners tell us if it is something they want to hear on the radio or not...so they really do help pick the songs we play.
6. Tell us about the Epilogues and how they became so big on KTCL?
The Epilogues are a great local band who have been playing for a few years now building a following here in Denver. They have an amazing live show and shoot all of their own videos...very creative and talented guys. I think we are going to see a lot from these guys in the future. Be on the lookout for the Epilogues!
7. Who are some of the past local bands to graduate from the station's annual Hometown For The Holiday competition?
The Flobots, Epilogues, Tickle Me Pink, and The Northern Way (not all have won, but all have been a part of it...along with many others).
8. How do you stay connected with your audience?
I stay connected with the audience as I am part of the audience. I live the lifestyle, go to the same shows, bars, restaurants... we like the same things.
9. What do you like best about living in Denver?
I love the people, the weather; there is so much to do -- shopping, skiing, hiking, biking, and concerts. I love it all!
10. If you could work anywhere, what would your dream job be?
Hmmm, I think I have it! If I could bring my co-workers and job to a station on a tropical beach...that would top what I currently have...maybe.
Bonus Questions
When you're away from work, what are you music listening habits to the radio, iPOD, online, etc.?
I listen to the radio a lot in the car when I am away from work. I flip around and listen to other stations and formats. I don't use my iPod very much. Online, I stream occasionally. I am a radio listener for the most part, unless I break out the CDs/vinyl for some guilty pleasure favorites.
