BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Hudson: I was a model, A horse shit shoveler, and owned a hair salon at the age of 17. And no I don't do hair or nails so don't ask me.... I went to NYU, interned at record plant studios, was a club kid at night. Barely slept or ate... My parents put me on a plane to Hawaii to get me out of the crazy lifestyle I was living that was gonna go bad.... I started throwing themed parties in Hawaii... Like NYC just on a WAY more mellow mode. So having been a model and a degree in PR and music, I recorded and wrote my own spots for the parties and was shortly contacted by a radio station PD asking if I've ever done radio and if I would be down to do overnights. The rest is history. How's that in a ballsack? I'd say nutshell but I think the word sack just reeks fun times.
Scotty: Started radio career in high school and worked for several radio stations in Texas, Oklahoma, Hawaii, and Guam. Host on 808 Golf TV, the Miss Hawaii USA Pageant , and has even filled in for a local NBC weatherman. Also host midday show on KSSK, in addition to half of the popular Bizarro Show on Star 101.9.
1. How did you become interested in radio?
Hudson: Growing up in NYC music and the radio was LIFE. I lived for the countdown shows... I LOVED KTU, Z100, WBLS, and WNEW. Music was my passion. I was always the go to person to make mix tapes. In 6th grade I would make these tapes and intro and outro the songs and sell them to my friends in school. I forgot about that until an old school friend reminded me of this. Classic! I LOVE to talk... I never shut up... so it was meant to be.
Scotty: Long story short... I was 16 years old and looking for a job. My friend Brad knew a local DJ at a small mom and pop station in Hugo, Oklahoma. I went in and read a weather forecast for the owner and was hired. The conversation with the owner went like this, "The pay is minimum wage...Say 'KIHN- Hugo' at the top of each hour.....I don't care what you play... and lock the door at 10p after you sign off.....Deal?" "Deal!"
2. What led you to Star 101.9 in 1995 and what has been your biggest accomplishment?
Hudson: I just had started doing overnights on our now long gone Classic Rock station. I was doing wild crazy stuff... from liquid latex painted on me by some dominatrix to riding around town on the back of the station motorcycle in a bikini to hosting for E! Wild on in Hawaii. My ratings were crazy for an overnight show so the GM decided to flip CD101.9 and create a station around me. They tried to get the call letters KHUD but the call letters were taken. They created Star 101.9 based on my likes.... and the rest is history. So ... my biggest accomplishment would have to be, "The test of time."
Scotty: In 1999 I was working at a station across town and the PD and OM of Star had this vision of teaming me with Hudson. The four of us met for lunch and found that she and I had absolutely nothing in common. I thought the meeting had been a failure until they explained that was exactly what they were looking for... Two unique perspectives and lots of fireworks on the radio.
3. How would you describe the Hudson & Scotty B show?
Hudson: Hmmm, it's like putting on your favorite pair of chucks and realizing your dog just crapped inside your shoe and that's what's squishy.
Scotty: A local columnist once described us something like this. Hudson is a balloon and Scotty is the brick that keeps her from flying away. (Was balloon a nice way of saying air head? Hmmm, that just occurred to me.)
4. What makes your morning show successful?
Hudson: Scotty and I are a true team. Scotty is so left and I'm sooo right. Nah, we have that real ying and yang that so many shows on the mainland try and emulate.
Scotty: We strive to have a relationship with our listeners and not just be voices on the radio. Our listeners know that they can talk about anything with us. We laugh a lot but can also cover heavy things when needed. Even though we are constantly at each others throat, the listeners can relate to one side or the other.
5. How do you prep for your show each morning?
Hudson: I wakey wakey no hands on the snakey at 3am... Start with coffee and reading social media. Twitter, FB, my secret site... porn, show prep ... to what's buzzing in the entertainment world that I could twist into some sorted tale.
Scotty: I read everything I can get my eyes on. My first trip to the bathroom in the morning includes my iPad. I check email, social media, and Words With Friends. Then it's on to the news and gossip sights. When I get to the studio, the first stop is the news room for the latest local stories. Hudson and I talk over things that happened to us in our lives or things we watched on TV that might be compelling for our listeners that day... and off we go.
6. What would surprise people most about your show?
Hudson: Unlike most radio hosts, we have a face for radio.
Scotty: In the 13 years we have been doing the show, other than station events, Hudson and I have never run into each other socially at stores, restaurants, movies, sporting events...not once.
7. What do you love most about your job?
Hudson: EVERYTHING!!! There has never been a day in my career that I didn't wake up happy to go to work -- from my GM Chuck Cotton to My OM Jamie Hyatt to the fans ... even Scotty is ok... Nah... I get to wake up in paradise doing what I love ... listening to music and gossiping... I'm SO lucky!!
Scotty: It's fun. Like most of the guys in this business, I have thoughts and opinions that NEED to be heard.
8. Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
Hudson: WOW, this is hard question to answer. I have SO many close friends that when they read this they are gonna say, "I can't believe you didn't say me".... But I'm going with Elvis Duran. I grew up listening to him and later on became friends with him. He's got a twisted sense of humor and I relate to that.
Scotty: Early in my career I really enjoyed Rick Dees, Kid Kraddick, and a show in Dallas called Walton And Johnson. Thanks to iHeartRadio, I've had a chance to hear a fellow Texan... Elvis Duran & The Morning Show in NY and really liked how they interact with each other and their audience. Similar vibe to the show we do... they may have a few more resources though.
9. How are you using Social Media?
Hudson: I'm using it right now on my phone. I LOVE how much we use social media. It is an amazing tool if you know how to use it. It's mandatory we blog and connect with fans on a daily basis. Even if it wasn't mandatory... I have seen with my own blue eyes the increase in web hits and now a lot of advertisers are not just buying the ratings. They also want to see web hits... and let me just tell you... if it ever goes to commission for us based on web hits... Cha-Ching... ohhh good idea I just put it out there... talk about incentive.
Scotty: I post every day and use it to send traffic to my station blog. I also believe that it really helps listeners to feel a personal connection with you. I don't just use it to promote station stuff but I also make sure to share my regular life stuff too.
10. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
Hudson: youporn
