BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Started out of school as an intern at WRIF/Detroit. I then got hired to work on the promotions team and on-air part-time. During this time, I was also on-air at WKQZ/Saginaw. I've been at 89X the past five years.
1. What stands out the most from when you first started at 89X?
Over the past five years, the changes in the format. The trends in the alternative rock format make it easy for different styles to come and go so easily. I also enjoy seeing how I've grown over the years as a music director and on-air DJ.
2. What is most important to you when championing new music for the station?
Getting behind good new music is one of the best ways to keep the format alive. It's a great feeling to get behind something early and then see it do really well.
3. What new bands are you most excited about right now?
Gaslight Anthem, Walk The Moon, Rome, Young Guns, etc.
4. What is your favorite part of your job?
Being able to do something that I enjoy doing every single day.
5. What makes your night show unique?
The energy, for one. Mainly, my ability to relate to listeners that have grown up and lived in the city I grew up in, and getting a chance to feature new music and get feedback on what the listeners think about it.
6. How are you using Social Media?
I like social media when it's not abused or obsessed over to the point that's all you ever talk about. I believe your post should be of quality content and not just stating the obvious, like "sucks it's raining outside," no shit, tell me something I don't know? The other day on my station fan page, I asked, "what has been the most played song on your summer playlist so far," I got a great response and it was a good chance for me to interact with my listeners.
7. What would surprise people most about you?
I consider myself to be very well-rounded when it comes to music. There isn't a sole genre of music that I listen to. From hip-hop, metal, electronic, and punk, you name it.
8. How did you score the Motor City Music Minute at Detroit Red Wings home games?
Being knowledgeable about the music that's coming out of Detroit and Windsor, and having good relationships and ideas with the right people to help things like the Motor City Music Minute come together.
9. Explain your role with AOL Radio?
I am a Music Director and overlook 18 stations including New Rock First, New Metal First, and Street Beats (Hip Hop). My job is to keep the stations up to date on new music and get the early jump on new artists and songs.
10. What are you most proud of since joining the station?
Being a part of a team that has helped the station reach it's highest ratings since its inception, and helping build the 89X brand to what it is now in Detroit and Windsor.
Bonus Questions
What excited you most from your recent trip to Thailand?
Being overseas in a different country for the first time in my life, and seeing a different culture, really opens your eyes to the differences in life across the world. It helps break out of the "bubble" that we live in here in the U.S.
What is your goal for this November's New York City Marathon?
I'm very fortunate to be able to be part of a prestigious marathon such as the New York City Marathon. My goal is to run the best race that I can, give it my all, and raise money for charity (Team For Kids).
