BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
KXTE/Las Vegas, Radio Spokane, KNDD part-time, KRZQ and KMXW/Reno, and back to KNDD.
1. How did you become interested in radio?
I always listened to the radio as a kid and was obsessed with music since birth so the thought of becoming a radio jock really should have hit me before I turned 20, but unfortunately that's how long it took. Went to college for Photography, but only ever wanted to take photos of bands so my teachers recommended I switch to Broadcasting. Once I made the transition, all my new teachers loved my voice and threw me on the air. That was 6 years ago.
2. I know returning to The End was a dream come true. What part of your job do you love the most?
I love getting to be a part of the hugely talented group of people that have worked at The End and made it what it is today. So, being able to introduce myself as "Pepper from The End" makes me pretty giddy. Our view isn't bad either.
3. How would you describe your midday shift on The End?
As local as you can get. I wanted to say silly, but the local thing sounds better. All I do is highlight local bands, local events, and local news. I love getting paid to talk about Seattle.
4. What makes your show unique?
Probably nothing, it's all been done before, right? If I have to answer... I guess me. I'm natural, casual, and I giggle a lot. There's nothing manufactured or syndicated about my show.
5. What is most important to you when championing new music for The End?
It's important to me that I have a connection to the music and believe in the bands. I mean, I know my job is to sell music on the air whether I like it or not, but when you really mean what you're saying about a band... I think the audience can tell. And I'm incredibly hard to impress when it comes to music.
6. Describe the weekly music meeting at the station?
Time consuming. We all care about music too much, if that's even possible. Before you know it, two hours have gone by and we aren't done discussing the third band we've listened to that day.
7. Tell us about Pepper's Blog and how you use social media?
I love my blog! It's my little corner of The End. I started something called "End Recommends" where I highlight things our listeners should check out around town. Usually shows. When I'm not being lazy, I like to blog about Weird News likes Bigfoot sightings! Our social media presence is pretty intimidating. We're nearly on it 24/7. I wish there were ratings for an online presence. We'd kill it.
8. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
Caffeine. Lots of it.
9. What do you love most about living in Seattle?
You can run into Eddie Vedder at the grocery store. Sub Pop Records is down the street from the office. The Seahawks finally won the Super Bowl. Oh, and the rain. For a kid from the desert, there is nothing better on this earth, than rain.
10. What may surprise people about you?
I am now a knitter. Yes, I'm 26 years old and I knit. And I'm pretty damn good. You should buy a scarf from me because we all know radio doesn't pay enough!
Bonus Questions
Last non-industry job?
Urban Outfitters. Like the true hipster that I am, I really wish I had a cooler answer.
First concert?
Savage Garden when I was 8 or 9 something. Not even the tiniest bit embarrassed about that.
Favorite band of all-time?
Fiona Apple is more an artist than a band, but she will always be the best thing my ears have ever heard.
