BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I have spent the last 15 years at 92.9 KJEE.
1. How did you become interested in radio?
I became interest in radio when I heard Wolfman Jack in George Lucus' American Graffiti and listening to old school Los Angeles, KROQ Jocks. Freddy Snake Skin, Jim "The Poor Man" Trenton, Jed The Fish, Dusty Street, Tami Heidi, and Doug The Slug are some of my favorites. I remember seeing Jed The Fish at live remote in Newport Beach. Jed put my little brother live on the air early on during the live broadcast and my brother was completely stoked! I remember thinking that I want to be that guy who gets to stoke people out on the radio!
2. What led you to KJEE 15 years ago?
I found my way to KJEE by way of on air contest back in April 2000, one of the longtime Morning jocks, DM, was moving on, and the current morning show host Spencer, was having a "Who wants to be a DJ" contest where the winner was going to get a show on KJEE. There was at least 75 people trying out and needless to say I wasn't the winner but I was offered an internship and eventually started working on-air weekend nights!
3. What do you love most about your job?
The thing I love most about being on-air is no matter how I feel or how crappy my day is, I know my show will make me feel better; it's therapeutic for me and I really love stoking out the listeners!
4. What is it like working for Eddie Gutierrez?
Working for Eddie G, is great! Eddie G easy going, dependable, and fair. I like to get into trouble sometimes and Eddie G still lets me work for him after all these years!
5. How would you describe your afternoon show?
My afternoon show is high energy, entertaining, and outright silly! I have a few regular bits, one where I am buzzing our Music Director Dave Hanacek via intercom and asking him ridiculous questions about whatever. I really enjoy putting listeners on-air, and I am constantly messing with the telemarketers that call our request lines!
6. What makes your show unique?
My show is unique because I still air callers as much as I can - winners, listeners, and requests! I'll air it If it good, funny, and coincides with my show that day.
7. Who gave you the name Phat J?
So remember that morning show contest I mentioned earlier on how I got my job here at KJEE? Well the morning show asked us our names and why we thought we should be on-air. Well there was already a guy named Joel, and he was asked first, and I didn't want to be the 2nd Joel, so I named myself Phat J ( I was morbidly obese and it just felt right) and asked them, "Who doesn't like to spend their mornings with a Phat J so I'd be perfect?" Laughter ensued, Phat J was born!
8. Tell us about Wolfman Jack hair and beard?
A couple of years ago I decided to take better care of myself. Eating better and working out on a regular basis, so I grew my hair out and grew a beard. I will cut my hair and trim my beard off once I've hit my goal weight. Plus, Wolfman Jack is one of my all-time favorite DJs of all time and who doesn't want to emulate him?
9. Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
Wolfman Jack. He was the DJ of his time and beyond. MC for rock bands at local clubs, film, and television what more could he do? He had one of the most recognizable voices I've ever heard! I remember going to Knott's Scary Farm in Buena Park, Ca. to watch and hear him host!
10. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
I can't make it through the day without my Iced Trinti, no water, no sweetener, 3 scoops of matcha, and green tea from Starbucks.
