NAME:Josh TielorTITLE:PDSTATION:KEGEMARKET:Pocatello/Idaho Falls, IDCOMPANY:GAP West BroadcastingBORN:CaucasianRAISED:Bad Ass!
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I got my education at the Academy Of Radio And TV Broadcasting at the now closed Phoenix, AZ campus. After I got my fancy diploma and a stack of debt, I moved back to Idaho for reasons that are still confusing to me. I was fortunate enough to get my first gig in the business doing full-time nights on KCVI. I moved around different shifts there for two years and left to pursue a PD gig in '04 at a new Alternative station, KADQ/Idaho Falls, a carbon copy of KXRK/Salt Lake City. Got fired, cuz I wanted the education and experience that comes from it... and did construction for 4 months before landing a midday gig at KPKY when it was still "Super Hits of the 60s & 70s." It's now a classic rocker and I'm now just down the hall as PD of KEGE.
LAST NON-INDUSTRY JOB:
Construction -- Doors, windows, siding... Damn you manual labor... damns you.
FIRST RECORD EVER PURCHASED:
The land of cassette tapes wasn't that good to me... what with the Snoop Dogg and Warren G... so let's talk CDs... the 1st CD that I remember owning was The Smashing Pumpkin's Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness.
FIRST CONCERT:
Goldfinger, Lefty & Mest
FAVORITE BAND OF ALL-TIME:
How dare you ask this of radio people. It's practically impossible to choose one.
1. How did you become interested in radio?
I remember sitting in my room when I was like 10 or so with my Singalodeon making aircheck tapes. Please God don't let those re-surface. For as long as I can remember music and radio have always just been there.
2. What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
There was an Alternative station, 98X, that has since become an Oldies station (KGTM). That's where I got my first taste of Jed The Fish and Polychronopolis.
3. What's one thing that would surprise many people to learn about you?
I am a HUUUGE Lost fan. And also, I've been in radio for eight years and I'm 26.
4. How would you describe the music and imaging on the station?
The music is pretty straightforward mainstream alternative. I will often pick a track that KDLD is playing the hell out of and add it in for flavor. I think it makes the station familiar, but new and very fresh. Imaging wise, I have the best voice guy in the business, Steve Stone (you're my hero). I try to image the station with a sense of humor and, like any other station, try to sound different and stand out on the dial.
5. What would an outsider find most surprising about your radio market?
There are at least 5 different Country stations in the LOCAL market and there are no other Alternative stations (aside from XROCK in Boise) in the entire state. Also, strange as it is, only one local CHR. And there's a 45 minute drive between the two cities -- Pocatello and Idaho Falls -- that make up South East Idaho Metro.
6. What makes The Edge unique?
I really like making new music available for listeners to find out about. I have new music category that gets 10 spins per week in regular rotation to give people a taste of songs that haven't broken yet.
7. Tell us about the different new music features you have on The Edge?
Borrowing a page from KEDJ in Phoenix, we run a feature called Alternative Edge-Ucation. It's a really cool feature that allows us to showcase the new music that we're thinking about adding to the station, or just find to be interesting. It also ties into the website and greatly increases the web-hits. We also air a specialty show on Saturday nights called Off The Record. It's an hour long, 16 tracks, show that features the brand new music hitting the world.
8. How would you describe The Morning Edge?
The Morning Edge is retarded... like how the Black Eyed Peas say it.
It's a music-intensive morning show with lots of contesting. I do the Morning Edge Super Pop Quiz, Freak Du Jour, Bass Ackwardz and the newest feature is Drew's Awesome Stuff -- where I call my friend Drew at 6:30 each morning, wake him up... and he has to tell me something awesome. It's fun, stupid, and really easy to do.
9. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
Singing a song about punching kids. It's not that I actually want to or would punch a kid, but the lyrics, "punch a kid" or "punch a baby" seem to fit into EVERY song. It's amazing!
10. What career path would you be following had it not been for this industry?
I always wanted to be a pilot... I still do.
