1. How did you become interested in radio?
Listening to Hollywood Hamilton. To this day, I still remember a bit he did. A girl calls the station, she's really excited about getting through to make a request, and then her dad gets on the phone and starts going off on her like she's in trouble.
As a kid listening to the radio, I thought it was real and she was busted. Then later on, I learned about creating bits and it was on.
2. What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
KPOI (98 Rock) and KQMQ (93FMQ) in Hawaii. Go Warriors, no ka oi.
3. What do you like best about your job? Least?
Best: The lifestyle. Dirt bike, snowboard, river trips. It's stuff I like doing and so do our listeners.
Least: Arbitron inconsistencies. Come on, my bonus depends on these numbers.
4. What has been the key to your longevity at X103.9?
Longevity... orange juice. I drink an 8 oz. Glass of OJ every morning and my flaxseed oil. The flaxseed oil is supposed to be good for your joints and help heal dead cells. But the orange juice is the key to longevity.
5. Of all the things you've done at the station, what are you most proud of?
Doing nothing and still getting ratings. I work middays, I'm told no topics, no games, no this, no that. I do one benchmark feature and still the numbers come in.
6. What is your biggest challenge each day?
Waking up. I get requested for a lot of club gigs. Sometimes, I'll be up till 2-3a and I have to be at work by 9:30a the next day. I hate waking up to an alarm! I'd be stoked to be able to do my show from home in my underwear. That would kick ass.
7. What would an outsider find most surprising about the station?
We really don't take ourselves too seriously. Unlike the corporate stations with VP/Programming and consultants and big name program directors, we'll throw on a song that's unconventional and it's ok.
I'll give you an example. If you look up the Mediabase history of Rehab's Sittin' at a Bar. It's a song that was released in 2000. Forward eight years later (sfx: tape winding fast), we added it and now it's on over 100 stations as detected airplay. Unconventional.
8. What's one thing that would surprise many people to learn about you?
I'm OCD but I'm learning to kick back.
9. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
I'm a cunning linguist. I appreciate oral skills. I'd have to say I can't make it through the day without oral skills
10. What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
I've worked in at few radio stations. I get gigs for doing the basics well, when I expand onto some bits and features, most PD don't get my air work. With each new station, my numbers still kick ass. I keep looking forward and charge it.
