Clear Channel bought the station and I became Production Director of the Clear Channel Des Moines cluster. 1. How did you become interested in radio?
I actually listened to a lot of Talk radio as a kid in Chicago. Steve Dahl and Gary Meier on WLS and AM1000 were HUGE. Kevin Matthews w/Jim Shorts was always entertaining. For music, it was all about The Loop and Jonathan Brandmeier. When I went off to college at Illinois I thought I'd give radio a try and was lucky enough to find WPGU, an awesome student-run radio station.
2. What do you like best about your job?
Playing the New Rock in the afternoons for the kids. I enjoy our music meetings and listening to the stack of new CDs we get and hearing what everyone thinks. I try to involve as much of our air staff as possible.
3. What is your biggest challenge at the station?
Making sure I don't say News Talk KASI on Channel Q! I know this is the standard answer, but juggling time between the two stations is always a challenge. I hope that in '06 someone will perfect human cloning or a way to freeze time.
4. What would surprise people most about Channel Q?
We will play local artists, and I'm not just talking about Slipknot. Those guys are all so talented and amazing, but we've really discovered a great local music scene in central Iowa. We already have a successful weekly local show, but we also give regular airplay to other local bands that fit what Channel Q is doing. The Envy Corps and The Lifestyle are a couple examples. Check out their sites on myspace.com
5. What are you most proud of since taking over as PD of the station?
I think really all of 2005. Last year was fantastic for Channel Q. Our staff worked hard and we saw some ratings success. We were extremely active all year long with tons of great promotions and giveaways. I'm hoping for continued success in the New Year.
6. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
offering my DJs some insightful way on how to improve. I know they appreciate it.
7. What song surprised you the most in 2005 and why?
I'd have to say "Sugar, We're Going Down" from Fall Out Boy. Not that I was surprised that it was a hit, we got on it very early and we saw a response immediately. It was just so wild to watch that happen everywhere and in a matter of months to see Fall Out Boy go from playing a skate rink to headlining their our arena tour. We wish them continued success in '06.
8. Besides your own, what is your favorite radio format?
I've really become addicted to Sports Talk. It might just be that the Bears are in the playoffs, the White Sox won the World Series, and the Illini were a Final Four team, but I find myself listening a lot to our Sports-Talk station KXNO.
9. Biggest career highlight?
I got to see the Ramones in 96 in Indy on their final tour. After the show I went back stage to meet Joey Ramone. I think that was the first time was speechless.
10. If you decided to completely change careers today, what would you do?
I think I'd go open a Jimmy John's in Hawaii.
Bonus Questions
What are your hobbies?
There's not usually much time for hobbies after work and family. I tried Fantasy Football for the first time this year and broke even. I basically won my entry fee back.
