How about a top 5, in no order? Ben Folds Five, Jane's Addiction, Tool, Steely Dan, and about 15 others, including Floyd, Zeppelin, Rush, Son Volt, Foo Fighters, Petty, Gov't Mule, Allmans, Dead, etc. Favorite new band is definitely Raconteurs. The album is beautiful.
1. What part of your job do you like best? Least?
Music - listening, playing, and turning people on to it.
Least? All the other aspects of the job that have nothing to do with music.
2. What is your biggest challenge at the station?
Doing it all without a promo budget.
3. How has X102.3 changed in the past year?
We tweaked the music to lean much more Alt. (Yay!), changed to a female station voice, and split up morning show (that was not my call).
4. Rundown your on-air line-up with a brief description of each daypart?
Morning X, hosted by myself and my midday girl, Laureen (she comes in at 7). Music intensive, with lots of bits and pop culture topics, Stewart-style news, and as many phoners as possible.
Middays with Laureen featuring 90s @ Noon, which covers a different 90s topic every day and plays (gasp!) requests.
Jason Lee in afternoons with the work release program.
Albro at night, with the Fresh Rock show weeknights at 9pm.
Overnights are tracked by Joel Hoffman.
5. What makes your station unique?
Personalities and music. We strive to play artists not available anywhere else in the market, although we do share the obvious ones with Active Rock and Hot AC.
6. What would surprise people most about the station?
That we are able to monitor the actions and conversations of all our listeners while they have us tuned in. We've got nasty shit on pretty much everybody.
7. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _______?
F*cking myspace - also, email, and cigarettes.
8. What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Do your best, always, and whatever happens, find the most positive outcome possible.
9. Biggest career highlight?
Tough one. Here are a few big highlights: Helping raise $10,000 worth of toys for Toys For Tots in one day, interviewing Ben Folds, and interviewing Warren Haynes and having him perform acoustically in my studio with just he and I present was a big one.
10. What career path would you be following had it not been for this industry?
I really don't know. Probably would've fallen into the family business of aftermarket automotive accessories, I guess. I never really wanted to do anything else.
Bonus Questions
What are your hobbies?
Video games (Xbox 360 & PC), singing and playing guitar with Phil's Family Lizard, which is sort of a super sounds of the 70s kind of thing, and working as a practice coach and referee for the Ft. Wayne Derby Girls (www.fwderbygirls.com).
