1. How did you become interested in radio?
Listening to WDVE in Pittsburgh and WMMS in Cleveland in the `80s and early `90s. Those two stations sounded larger than life. They both embodied everything about their respective cities. My interest in radio started there.
2. Why was the station so successful in the Winter '05 Book (12+ 2.5-3.5)?
The Clear Channel Less Is More initiative certainly helped. We're playing more music an hour and that's never a bad thing. We also cut back the promotional clutter and simplified the imaging. Plus, Elliot in the Morning continues to kick ass.
3. What are you most proud of from the Winter '05 Book?
We're strong across all day parts from mornings to night.
4. Rundown your on-air line-up with a brief description of each jock?
Elliot in the Morning is simulcast from DC101. Best morning show anywhere, period.
Casey in middays. He's a jerk and plays a lot of music. Alyssa in afternoons. She's the resident music geek on the staff and she's really plugged into the local music scene, which gives her a lot of street cred. She's out in the clubs going to shows and is actively involved in the community. Crash in nights. His show is phone intensive and personality-driven. Every freak, degenerate, and weirdo in Richmond has probably been on the show.
5. What is your biggest challenge at the station?
Being PD, midday host, APD, Music Director, camp counselor, and fantasy baseball owner.
6. What would surprise people most about The X?
How hard we are for an Alternative. Slipknot has been in power for months. Lamb Of God is from Richmond and there is a great metal scene here. It's more of a rock town than most people think.
7. What do you like best about your job?
Free donuts in the break room.
8. What has been your biggest accomplishment at the station?
Our annual Chili Cook-Off keeps getting bigger and bigger. Seeing 20,000 people at this event year in and year out never gets old. Hopefully the best is still to come.
9. Biggest career highlight?
Doing what we've done despite very little marketing. The station and myself have won a few awards too. It's nice to be recognized by your peers.
10. If you could work at any station, where it be and why?
How about market? New York City. I would love the opportunity to work and play there some day.
Bonus Questions
What do you enjoy doing for fun?
I'm a big Pittsburgh sports nut. I make several pilgrimages to "The Burgh" each year to see the Steelers and even the lowly Pirates.
