1. How did you become interested in radio?
I was going to U.L.L. for English education. I was doing my thing, making the grades and whatnot, but it was starting to get old. Then, my buddy Rob Summers offered me a weekend position. He knew that I knew the Alt format very well and thought I would be great for the job. I, however, thought that I would be a complete disaster (which isn't to say that I'm still not). I turned him down twice. Then one day he called me again, and I was fed up with school and working three jobs, so I decided to give it a shot.
2. Why was The Planet successful in the Spring '05 Book?
Man, we busted our asses! Not that we hadn't before, but we just did it in a smarter way, I think. We did some great tweaking of the music with our consultant, Alan Sneed, before the book started. We really re-vamped our gold library. Also, the music over the past three-to-four months has been incredible. We made sure that we hit the streets every day, appointment contesting. We re-did all of the stations imaging, and just stayed focused.
3. What were the highlights for the station?
The entire book is a highlight for me. We got a lot of phone calls from listeners telling us they could tell we had "done something to the music," and they loved it. That instant feedback is always exiting.
4. What are you most proud of from the Spring '05 Book?
The fact that the numbers are finally starting to reflect the power of the station. There's nothing more frustrating than when you hold an outdoor show and you have over 10,000 listeners show up, yet the ratings are completely unreflective of what your station really is.
5. What is your biggest challenge at the station?
To keep the market with a steady flow of good shows. We do a pretty good job of it, but shows aren't exactly falling in our lap. That, along with the task of not letting the station become too cluttered with promotions.
6. Tell us about your on-air line-up with a brief description of each jock?
Hmmm... It's me (6-10a) - I'm just the resident weird-o I guess. My on-air name is Tard, so that kind of gives me the chance to act like a complete idiot on the air, and it's ok. Jude (10a-2p) - He is our Cajun/sports guy. He was born and raised in Breaux Bridge, LA, so with roger and I being "out of towners" he's a great asset to me as far as far local culture goes. He's also a sports fanatic, and being a male-targeted station, he makes sure we're up to snuff on everything sports related. Roger (2-6p) - He is a complete idiot, quite the opposite actually. He's a very smart guy, and that translates on the air. The great thing about Roger is he can strike up a conversation about any topic, and legitimately know what he's talking about. I mean anything from physics to Blue Grass music; he's got it covered. When he's out doing remotes or station events, he's so good with the listeners. He can really connect with them on so many levels. Jobo (6-11p) - Josh is our ace in the hole. He's the young rock guy you want wearing your station's t-shirt, but he works here. He really keeps us in touch with the local scene. He goes to the shows around here and makes connections with the band on the local scene, which is very important to us. With the three of us married with kids, it hard for us to get out all the time and do this sort of thing, so Josh keeps us on top of what's happening, and does a great job doing it.
7. What would surprise people most about KFTE?
I don't think there's really any surprises here.
8. What do you like best about your job?
Being surrounded by music 24/7... it is truly a blessing.
9. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
myspace.com
10. If you wanted to completely change careers today, what would you do?
Whatever it takes to pay the bills, legally.
