LAST NON-INDUSTRY JOB:
The Gap.
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I interned (which is code for took out the trash) over a summer at a cluster of three stations. Then I worked for WPGU doing everything from news and sports to producing a morning show and eventually becoming Program Director and afternoons. Dave Wellington then made me an offer to come to Las Vegas (what recent college grad would turn that down) and I started overnights at KXTE. I soon became Assistant Music Director then took a trip across the hall to work middays at KMXB. When Chris Ripley took over the reigns at Xtreme he hired me back to be his Music Director and work nights. Then I had afternoons for a couple of months and now I'm doing middays.
FIRST RECORD EVER PURCHASED:
I really don't remember, but Dookie (Green Day) was definitely one of the first.
FIRST CONCERT:
I honestly don't know.
FAVORITE BANDS OF ALL-TIME:
Too many good ones.
1. How did you become interested in radio?
My parents were nazi's about television, so I listened to the radio a LOT.
2. What do you like best about your job?
Pretty much everything. It kind of amazes me that people get paid to do listen to music that they like and then talk about it.
3. What is your biggest challenge?
Adaptiveness -- only one big word.
4. The station recently adopted a new slogan, "Xtreme Rock Radio." In what ways has KXTE changed?
There have been several major changes; the biggest being the new afternoon show Xtreme Disorder. Ripley plucked three guys out of South Carolina to come in and take over from 3-7pm. We've also changed the logo for the first time in nearly ten years. The music has shifted too, we put in Guns and Roses and AC/DC, very sparingly, for the first time.
5. The station toes the line between Alternative and Rock. Explain your position?
I think you pretty much summed it up. We rock, we report as an Alternative. We've stepped out on some huge bands like My Chemical Romance who pretty much fit into the Alternative, but can be played in the same quarter hour as Godsmack.
6. What would surprise people most about KXTE?
With the exception of a couple people, our entire programming and promotions staff is under 26.
7. Biggest career highlight?
All Access 10 Questions.
8. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
A good run.
9. Besides your own, what is your favorite station and why?
KROQ--I think they do an amazing job of reinventing themselves year after year. They step out on new music, create unique promotions, harvest great talent, and stay on top in the ratings.
10. If you wanted to completely change careers today, what would you do?
I'd open my own business, if that didn't work out I'd sign up for that Monday morning stripper shift.
