NAME:MUDTITLE:PD/AfternoonsCOMPANY:Next MediaMARKET:Wilmington, NC (#176)BORN:North CarolinaRAISED:North Carolina
LAST NON-INDUSTRY JOB:
Golf Course Maintenance
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Started at WLOZ 89.1 Campus Radio in 1998. Joined WSFM as partttime board Op/on-air in 2000, then became afternoon host in '02, APD/MD stripes in '04, and took over as PD in December 2004.
FIRST RECORD EVER PURCHASED:
Motley Crue "Dr. Feelgood." I was 12 years old.
FIRST CONCERT:
Pantera and White Zombie @ The Lawrence Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem
FAVORITE BAND OF ALL-TIME:
That's like asking what my favorite cereal is. You can't just pick one. My top five: Tool, AIC, Megadeth, Incubus, and Pantera
1. How did you become interested in radio?
When I realized that my friend's band Alien 8 was never going to make it and I needed to do something with my life. I love music and had to be around it. I thought what would be the closest thing to being a rock star. Then it hit me - a radio host. You get to hang out with rock stars. You are always around music, so it only made sense. Once I got my first taste, I became an addict.
2. How has the station changed since you have taken over as PD?
We have had some on-air changes with our midday position. We did some minor tweaking to the music and gave more freedom to the on-air personalities.
3. What led to the station's ratings success in Spring 05 book?
It relates back to the last question. More music and less BS and the rest of the credit has to go to my jocks.
4. What were the ratings highlights for the station?
No. 1 18-34 in mornings, middays, tied for first in afternoons, and tied for third in nights.
5. What is your biggest challenge at the station?
Honestly, trying to top the performances of my jocks. It is easy to get distracted from your show with all the other things that must get done with the programming. They keep me on my toes.
6. Rundown your on-air line up with a brief description of each jock?
Mad Max has developed an unusual hybrid of morning radio. It is a healthy dose of the aforementioned idiocy, shaken and stirred with a liberal dose of social commentary and yes even intelligent conversations.
Taylor is Surf's newest member. She will be rockin' the midday's with The Drive Thru Lunch (a total request hour), and the fact she is a rock goddess should say enough.
Mud - Likes to work the phones, keep listeners informed of the latest music and entertainment news.
Dave Tripp - Unpredictable. You never know with this guy. Ask Magic 8 Ball, Rock Rewind, Rhyme Time, you just don't know what he will pull out next, literally. He also has a killer specialty show called "The Other Side." He dares you to take a walk on the other side every night at 11pm.
7. What do you like best about your job?
Refer back to question one. If you forgot, I get to live the life of a rock star everyday.
8. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without ___________?
My two basset hounds, Hannibal and Harlee.
9. Biggest career highlight?
Other than becoming PD of Surf 98.3, it was getting to meet Maynard from TOOL.
10. If you wanted to completely change careers today, what would you do?
After being in this career, I would like to go back to recording school and open my own recording studio and label.
Bonus Questions
What are your hobbies?
My dogs, surfing, guitar/drums, and checking out as much live music as possible.
