BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Started my radio career in 2014. I went to Specs Howard School of Media Arts in Detroit, and was lucky enough to land an on-air gig before I graduated. Moved around to a couple small markets in Canada, where I was able to gain experience in programming as well as learn to be a better on-air personality. Moved back to Windsor in 2007 landed a gig at 89X, which was a dream come true!
1. How did you become interested in radio?
I've been interested in radio for as long as I can remember. I grew up listening to 89X and Z-Rock in Detroit, and looked up to the DJs such as Steve Black, Ric Elliott, Sabrina West, Vince Cannova, Gnyp, and Phat Matt. Who knew that I would eventually be able to call some of these individuals not only co-workers, but friends.
2. You've spent the past 10 years at 89X. Tell us about your different roles at the station.
I've been very lucky. I started at 89X in 2007 as a part-time/fill-in DJ. From there, I worked my way up to overnights, and Music Assistant when our MD was on vacation. Spent a few years as the midday host, then evenings, and now I'm doing the morning drive and Music Director gig. Loving every minute of it.
3. Describe your morning show and your biggest challenge moving to AM-drive?
Most of the morning shows in our market are very talk intensive, so we decided to do something different and focus on the music. We still chat though... at the top of every hour, we check in on what's trending in the world. It can be anything from music to world events to new junk food items. We also touch on big sports stories around 20 after the hour, weather and general need to know and interesting stories. At 8am, we got the Box Office Beat Down where we give away tickets to the hottest shows coming to Detroit. I thought the biggest challenge in Mornings would be waking up, but that's actually the easiest part! I have a 3 year old son, so I'm used to not sleeping. Haha Shockingly, there haven't really been any challenged. The listeners are familiar with me, since they have been listening to me for a number of years already.
4. What is your show prep routine?
Show prep is on-going constantly. There are so many things in everyday life that you can discuss on-air. I get to the station around 4:45am and see what's trending that day. Local stories, sports, weather, etc. I try to have a couple things prepped the night before just to make it a little easier in the morning.
5. How would you describe your on-air style?
I'm pretty laid back, not only in person but on-air. I don't pretend to be someone I'm not, because listeners can see right through that. At least I think they can. Be real with your audience, and they will respect you.
6. What is your process on sorting through all the new music?
I'm always listening to new songs. I scan through the charts, see what's on All Access, listen to streams and other stations, etc. Music is so accessible now, and so easy to share, that you can find it everywhere. At the end of the day, I trust my judgement. I think I'm pretty good at knowing what listeners want to hear. My wife also has an AMAZING ear for good tunes, and she is always recommending new songs for me to check out.
7. What is your favorite part of your job?
I dig it all. I love interacting with listeners, and going to shows. Especially music festivals. I also dig listening to new music and chatting with reps. I'm a people person, and can talk for hours and hours. Haha
8. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without ___________?
Coffee. LOTS of coffee!
9. What would surprise people most about you?
I'm actually kind of shy at first. I think it sometimes comes off as being rude, but that's not my intention. Once you get to know me though, I won't shut up.
10. What stands out the most from when you first started working at 89X in 2007?
Mainly, how much the business has changed. It's not even close to being the same as it was when I started here. I'm really excited for the future of 89X!
