BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started interning for Entercom Sacramento in 2014 and was hired onto the street team in June of 2015. In March of 2016 I was promoted to Promotions Manager for 107.9 The End (KDND) and Star 106.5 (KUDL). Then in March of 2017 I was promoted to be Director Of Promotions for the cluster.
1. How did you become interested in radio?
On a whim several years ago while attending school for audio engineering I applied for an internship at Entercom Sacramento. A month in I was hooked. Don't believe the propaganda. Millennials love radio. Most of us just don't think the industry will ever welcome us in. I was fortunate. Entercom Sacramento is forward thinking and it provided a huge opportunity for me to learn and eventually influence the stations' marketing. Great promotions directors worked in that cluster before me. I was honored to follow in their footsteps and rise to Director Of Promotions for Entercom's six stations in Sacramento.
2. What led to your move to MD at ALT 103.7 in Dallas from Promotions Director at Entercom/Sacramento?
My goal is to be a great program director. I had worked closely with Jim Fox and with Rayne (KUDL PD) on brand strategy in Sacramento. I had been included in KKDO's music meetings and had begun to serve as backup for Andy Hawk (KKDO APD) when he was out of the office. When Jim made the move to Dallas I knew exciting things would happen here. I also knew the vision for ALT 103.7 was to have a fully integrated music director who could pull music strategies and marketing strategies together. I applied and fortunately Jim felt my skills offered the expanded bandwidth he was looking for in an MD.
3. You're reunited with your former boss. What's it like working with Jim Fox and what has the transition been like moving from Promotions Director to Music Director?
Before I accepted the director of promotions position in Sacramento I was warned that Jim is tough and expects a lot from his staff. I also worked under Rayne in Sacramento. Both have high expectations, but both were mentors who pushed me to think differently and dig deeper. Its possible Jim and Rayne may have actually learned a thing or two from me while we were there. We accomplished amazing things Sacramento and the same will happen in here in DFW. We're building an exciting brand with ALT 103.7. Every day's a learning experience as MD, but this is a strong team and between Jim and KVIL APD, Jake Springer I'm in good hands.
4. Give us the 411 on what everybody needs to know about ALT 103.7 - DFW's New Alternative?
ALT 103.7 will not only expose new Alternative music to Dallas-Fort Worth, but it will provide content that reflects the DFW culture. With the recent addition of Jenn Marino and more exciting staff announcements to come ALT 103.7 will embed itself in the lives of our audience.
5. What is your process and how would describe your style as Music Director?
Who can define what Alternative is today? I keep an open mind. I want to hear everything and rely on the diverse group who attend our music meetings and legitimate data to help make wise music choices.
6. Tell us about the ALT 103.7 Performance Showroom.
Wow! I wish I could take credit for it, but it was the vison of Entercom Dallas Market Manager Brian Purdy. It's impressive. It can accommodate 150 listeners and just about anything a band would want to bring to perform, acoustic to fully plugged in. With a more than 50-foot bar, it's about as close as you can get to a cool, intimate club experience and its right here in our building. In just the short time I've been with the cluster we've entertained a few hundred ALT 103.7 listeners with performances by AWOLNATION, Franz Ferdinand, Cold War Kids, Dirty Heads and Vance Joy.
7. What is your favorite part of the job?
Every day is different and exciting. I never get bored and I always have an opportunity to challenge myself.
8. What is one thing that has surprised you about Dallas/Fort Worth?
Not as many Texas accents as I expected.
9. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
"Pharaoh" - My French Bulldog
10. What would surprise people most about you?
I'm vegan. It's not that crazy but somehow still surprises everyone I meet.
