10 Questions with ... Tim Virgin
February 19, 2019
Have an opinion? Add your comment below. I am pretty much who I am on and off the air, a beautiful disaster. I hope that most breaks that I do cause some kind of reaction for the listener. Did I make em think? ... make em laugh? Maybe even get them to think ... WTF just happened? I want to be the guy a listener wants to hang out with but not necessarily be the guy they invite to their wedding. You don't want me at your wedding

BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Mine is not brief. WRQN/Toledo, Jammin 92/Cleveland, KPNT/St. Louis, WLUP/Chicago, Q101/Chicago, WXRK/New York, WNEW/New York, VP/Alt Promotion at Columbia Records, WHFS/D.C. with a couple vacations in the middle at The Edge/Phoenix and KEGY/San Diego.
1. About a year ago you returned to PM-drive on WKQX for your third stint at the station. How does it feel to be back on the Alt side after most recently hosting afternoons on legendary Rocker WLUP?
There are still so many emotions that I feel from those hours after the Loop was sold. Dealing with the loss of another iconic station and wondering where my life was going to take me next was not what I was ready for. You are NEVER ready for that. Thankfully I was blessed to have Troy and Walt come to me hours later and invite me back in to the 101WKQX family. When does that EVER happen? Being back at KQX is life changing in the fact that I am at a place that leads the lifestyle. You can't fool these listeners into liking you. So, in a good way, it's more challenging now that it ever was.
2. Give us the 411 on Tim Virgin, weekdays from 3-7p on 101WKQX.
I try to emulate what you have popping up in your Twitter and Instagram feeds but delivering it in "Tim Virgin" form on-air. Does that make sense? I also make sure I am talking about Chicago. Chicagoans are proud to be from here and love hearing about THEIR city so I try to give them just enough of that.
3. How has WKQX and afternoon drive changed over the years?
My first stint I remember about 1/3 of my of time being here, my second stint was about half and now I practically remember everything going on around me! It's delightful.
4. What's it like working for Troy Hanson?
He literally just walked passed me and said, and I quote, "What's going on FOUR EYES"! So.... there you go. (And yes I am wearing glasses.)
5. How would you describe your on-air style?
I am pretty much who I am on and off the air, a beautiful disaster. I hope that most breaks that I do cause some kind of reaction for the listener. Did I make em think? ... make em laugh? Maybe even get them to think ... WTF just happened? I want to be the guy a listener wants to hang out with but not necessarily be the guy they invite to their wedding. You don't want me at your wedding.
6. What is your show prep routine?
It's a lot easier than it used to be. Having the internet in front of you at all times in the studio gives you the opportunity to have endless real time show prep. I was never a guy who prepared the night before for my show. I do prepare the night before if it's an artist interview.
7. What is your favorite part of your job?
On-air is the most fun. Chicago is a city that loves its personalities and likes to responds to us that's why being on air at KQX is the best.
8. Who is your favorite on-air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
It has always been Howard. Just listening to how he has evolved has helped me evolve. He is the best.
9. What stands out the most from when you started your Alt radio career at KPNT/St. Louis in the mid-90s?
I worked at KPNT? That's right. Like I said before, some things are a blur.
10. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
Having a job or I would never wake up.
Bonus Questions
What are weekends like for you?
It depends on what season it is. Right now Hibernation and Netflix till spring.
What are your hobbies?
Riding Motorcycles and Mountain Bikes when the Chicago weather permits. Ski when I have the opportunity in the winter. I also love Shooting Sporting Clays (google it).
Tell us about your passion for motorcycles?
My uncles were bikers and I always thought they looked so cool and the bikes they rode looked even cooler. From there it just became a passion from building them to riding them.
Favorite new band from this past year?
www.instagram.com/themysterines
First record ever purchased?
Ozzy - Blizzard of Oz
First concert?
HEART. What can I say, I was stalking Nancy Wilson.
Favorite band of all-time?
I couldn't even attempt to do that. I love a ton of different genres so it's close to impossible for me.
Anything else you would like to add?
Fun Fact: Many hamsters only blink one eye at a time.
