1. I'm going to age both of us for a minute. You and I first connected about 30 years ago when you were beginning your radio career at influential College Alternative station WRAS/Atlanta. How did you first become interested in radio?
I had always been interested in radio. I grew up in Atlanta and would listen to WSB-AM as I would drive downtown to my bartending gig. When I enrolled in Georgia State, the first stop was WRAS. No talk show but I knew the music and was willing to stay up all night to be on the air.
2. You have been part of some amazing brands over the years. What led you from iHeartMedia/Miami to Indianapolis as SVP/Programming earlier this year?
The team in Miami is great, and I miss them. When Michael Jordan, Tony Coles, Brian Olson, Brett Bayshore & Earl Jones started talking to me about the gig in Indy, it seemed to be a good fit for me. And I love the team here too! Overall, just a good move for my family and me.
3. How do you divide your time programming a heritage Classic Rock Q95 and overseeing ALT 103.3?
Lucky for me I have Todd Violet overseeing Alt 103.3. It helps clear the path for me to focus on Q95. He and I talk a lot, but he controls most of it.
4. How does it feel to be back in the Alternative format?
It's funny. Some of the people like you I have known for almost 30 years. But I do remember who never called me back when I was just doing classic...I KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!!!!!!!
5. Let's talk about the strength of your rock brands in Indy?
I love being at the helm of the biggest rock brands in the market. WOLT (Alternative) and WFBQ (Classic rock) work together, creating a blanket of the markets rock demands. As I walk the halls, I am surrounded by a team of people that share the same pride and drive in regards to all of our brands, including WZRL and WNDE in addition to WOLT and WFBQ.
6. How would you describe yourself as a programmer?
I feel my description has shifted over the years. I try to spend more time with the door open and talking to my team. Not just about radio but life.
7. What is your favorite part of your job?
I like working with people and getting creative. Nothing more fun than sitting with a morning show and finding out what they have in their plans. By the way the Bob & Tom team is great to work with.
8. After living in South Florida for the past few years, how do you like living in Indianapolis?
I am still trying to find a use for all of the beach toys. I was in Baltimore for more than a decade. I still own jackets. Plus, the cost of living in Indy is incredible.
9. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without ________________?
Diet Coke, I know is bad for me, but I am strung out!!!!!!!!
10. What would surprise people most about you?
Most of my Facebook friends know this. But, I aspire to be on the competition barbecue circuit. I already own a competition smoker.
