1. Remarkably, it was almost 20 years ago to the day that you first answered All Access Alternative 10 Questions. You have come full circle with Planet Radio. Talk about what led you to starting your own media company as Chris Logan Media with your own online radio station, The Planet at ListenToThePlanet.com about a year ago.
Wow, crazy, that was 20 years ago. I have to be honest with my answer, because that's my story. I was terminated from Cumulus Media for refusing the vaccination in October of 2021. I'm not some crazed anti-vaxxer, I had covid twice, had antibodies in my body, proven by tests, and didn't feel like I needed to get the jab. After being relieved of my duties, I took a leap of faith and started Chris Logan Media. My focus was social media management, digital marketing, and podcast studio. I quickly rounded up some clients, most of whom supported my decision. I also knew I wanted to launch an online station but couldn't right away because Cumulus still held me to my non-compete. Once that was up, I launched The Planet, 90s & 00s Rock on April 12, 2022. It was a nod to Planet Radio, the station where I began my career over 20 years ago. The station was an instant success, all online! I have always felt that 90s and 00's music was an afterthought for radio, with few stations embracing it. I put my money where my mouth was and took that chance!
2. So, ABG/Lafayette Director Of Sales and Classic Hits KYBG (BIG 102.1) morning co-host Hans "Fast" Eddie was the first PD of Planet Radio. How did that help you and what was your pitch to KPCZ to get them to flip from Country to Alternative as Planet Radio 106.7?
Yes, I love Fast! The crazy thing is I didn't pitch them on the idea. Fast and I always joked about putting Planet Radio on the air, but it never happened. I spent some years at their cluster, on air and sales. A couplele of months ago, they approached me with the idea! Of course, I said yes and the negotiations began, lol. "Do you want to do your show from our studio?" they asked. My reply, "nope!" In December of 2022, I purchased a building and planned to build a studio/production room, podcast studio, and office. At the time, I was renting a space. I couldn't throw away the blood, sweat, tears and money over the past year of building Chris Logan Media. They agreed, and now everything is executed (except for on air commercials) from my studio, thanks to a Barix box and triggers!
3. Give us the 411 on the music on The Planet – 90's and 00's Rock.
It sounds like Planet Radio did in the early 2000s! Sounds like most alternative stations did back then! The core bands are Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. There's Live, 3 Doors Down, Creed, Nickelback, blink-182… you get the idea.
4. How broad is the music and what is the percentage of Alternative and Rock in your music library?
The playlist is tight now, but I will open it up eventually. It's 65% 90s and 35% 00s. Most of my music ranges from the early 90s to mid-2000s.
5. Who is your target audience and what is the coverage area on 106.7?
Target audience=Citizens of Planet Radio from back in the day! 30, 40, and 50-year-old demo. I'm 47, and my music isn't anywhere to be found in our market. It's all great grandpa's rock from the 70s and 80s, I want to play grandpa and daddy rock from the 90s and 00s. Response has been HUGE!
6. Talk about what you do to stay local and the digital component of Planet Radio 106.7.
Right now, I'm doing the morning show and staying as local as possible with content. Local is what radio needs to do to stand out! The more we compete with digital platforms, the more being local becomes essential, and NOT JUST TRAFFIC AND WEATHER! Listeners can get that on their phones and devices now! The digital components I use are the same as my online station, The Planet. I didn't want to lose any listeners. Listentotheplanet.com - apps, Alexa, iHeart, TuneIn Radio. Adding the FM was just the cherry on top!
7. You have a long history of hosting mornings in Lafayette. Who else is on the Planet 106.7 team?
Brigette Rose, who has been an on-air personality in the market for a while, does afternoons. Right now, we are running more music middays from 10a-3p. We have some killer shows on the weekend. I do the 90s Rock Rewind on Saturday mornings, and Saturday evening, I have an emo show called "Sadurdays" hosted by local music artist Hunter DeBlanc. We have the Hangover Café, the lighter side of The Planet with Nick on Sunday morning. The Loud Hour with Seth is a local rock music show at 6p every Sunday night. Seth has been in the market for a while and is heavily involved in the local music scene, as is Tyson, who hosts The Grindhouse. That's a metal show that airs at 8p.
8. What is a typical workday like for you and how has that changed now that you have an FM signal?
You don't want to know! Did I have time to add an FM to my day…nope, but I'll get it done!
9. What is your favorite part of your job?
Being on air, being creative and being me! Radio needs to get back to that or it'll be in trouble.
10. What would surprise people most about you?
I'm a huge classic country fan, 80s classic country to be exact!
