1. How did you become interested in radio?
The military told me that I was unworthy to fly their multi-million-dollar aircraft due to my crappy eyesight, so I went to college in back in the late-'80s. I thought I wanted to get into TV and broadcast production. So, I jumped on that track and took a few classes (turned out to be really, really boring). A buddy of mine volunteered at a local campus radio station and I sat in with him a few times, playing tunes and gabbing and having fun. I started paying more attention as to how the local commercial stations conducted their business ... I visited KXRX in Seattle and got a glimpse of Crow, West, and Vanderpool (among others), doing their things ... and I was hooked. I understood it; I "got it." I enrolled in a broadcasting trade school and never looked back.
2. What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
I grew up listening to WLS-AM... the last of the great Top 40 AMs? I also liked WLUP (The Loop) because I desperately wanted to be one of the Cool Kids. When I moved out to the west coast in HS, I became hooked on the great AORs like KISW and KXRX. That's what great radio was (and is) to me, and we need more of it these days.
3. What excited you most about joining WXSR?
I really like Tallahassee. It's got more going for it than one might think, not just college kids. There's a very diverse population, all hungry for what's new and exciting. Now if we could just get more national tours to include us, it'd be even better. Also, if Mediabase is listening, it seriously needs to re-consider monitoring this market.
4. How would you describe the music and imaging on X101.5?
We position ourselves as "The New Rock Station," which gives us a lot of flexibility in hitting both the Rock and Alt worlds. I tend to focus on the flow and aesthetics of the product rather than rigid category placement. Our imaging, from the Great Malcolm Ryker, tends to be on the goofy and/or irreverent side. We're very big on our web presence, as well, and are totally Male Pig-oriented in that department with lots of skin, sports, and the occasional goofy stuff.
5. What's one thing that would surprise many people to learn about you?
Been married for 16 years (to the same person). Can I make it to 17? Who knows!?
6. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
Full Throttle Blue Demon.
7. What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Everything we do in this business is subjective -- don't ever let anyone convince you that you don't have what it takes. Believe in yourself and your instincts. Surround yourself with people who want to support you and see you succeed, and get rid of those who do not.
8. What has been the biggest highlight of your career?
The day Doug LaGambina and the All Access staff finally remembered my birthday.
9. What music do you listen to when you're not working?
Whatever musical concoction my 7-year-old has created on his computer.
10. If you were to leave radio today and you could choose any other occupation, what would it be?
I really don't know... Something involving explosives, perhaps. Or maybe a paper route.
Bonus Questions
What are your hobbies?
I love to fly, when I can afford it. Still working on getting my pilot's license. I also play guitar very badly and scare myself silly riding my crotch rocket.
