NAME:ShadowTITLE:MDSTATION:KQRAMARKET:Springfield, MOCOMPANY:Midwest Family BroadcastingBORN:December 17thRAISED:Madison, WI
LAST NON-INDUSTRY JOB:
Hey, Bartender - Hit me with another ... I also did some local advertising with a (then) small company in Madison.
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I'm lucky to say that I've only been to two places in my whole 9 years in radio. 2000-2002 - WJJO/Madison, WI (hi guys!) and then in 02' I took a gig within the company and ended up at Q102 in Springfield, MO - it's cool, I've been here since the start-up.
FIRST RECORD EVER PURCHASED:
How about the first record that made a difference in my life? Scenario: I'm 12, skipping school and sitting at Burger King. Wow, do I love that band New Kids On The Block - how dreamy. Then my friend comes over and without even giving me a choice puts a pair of headphones on me, on those headphones is Metallica "The Frayed Ends Of Sanity " and I fell in love. I tore down all my NKOTB posters and bought "And Justice Of All..." I have a diverse taste in music, but I always think of what I could be favoring today, musically, had I not listened to that album. Of course it kills me that I suck at Guitar Hero: Metallica.
FIRST CONCERT:
Metallica in October of 91' - it was also the first time I head banged and felt what it was like to lose my hearing...
FAVORITE BAND OF ALL-TIME:
Metallica (older) with Static X coming in at a very close second.
1. What do you like best about living in Springfield?
I love the fact that Springfield is growing so fast! Since I moved here almost seven years ago we've acquired a minor league baseball team with a GREAT field, a massive place to hold concerts (ironically nick named The Q) and have added a few annual events that Midwest Family either created or contributed to -- Taste of Springfield and Oktoberfest!
2. What are you most passionate about?
Friends, family, music, laughing everyday, and beer.
3. What's one thing that would surprise many people to learn about you?
That I am such a girly girl. I have a ton of purses (one to match every outfit) and a ton of shoes. I also LOVE to cook and am pretty damn good at it.
4. What would an outsider find most surprising about the Springfield radio market?
Our radio station group is on the cutting edge of technology. We may be a medium sized market, but we're NOT gonna lag on the technology boom. Gotta keep going with the flow.
5. How would you describe the music and imaging on Q102?
I like to call us the bisexuals of radio. We can go both ways as long as it's a hit. Our imaging is funny but we try to keep it short. Our most popular is "Q102. Bitch." Straight and to the point.
6. What makes Q102 unique?
I love that we come up with new, fun and DIFFERENT promotions. None of that "listen at 10, 2 and 5" or register to win crap. We do texting; we use online tools and so on. I would rather have stellar EVENTS on air that bring in a lot of people and sound fun that a sub par promotion on air.
7. What has been the biggest highlight for the station over the past year?
Q102's BrewHaha with Ralphie May was great and we raised a TON of money for Cure Kids Cancer (in which the money stays here). But in all honesty ... That's only ONE of the events that we've created, executed and killed on! No *ss kissing here but my PD Kristen has these amazing ideas and we have one of the greatest staffs to get it done.
8. What music do you listen to when you are away from the station?
Uh oh. Here we go. I like a little of everything. I LOVE old school '80s love songs (Hello? Is it ME you're looking for?). Brittany can show her crotch anytime and I'll still love her. I need to hump Adam from Maroon 5 and the only good thing that ever came out of American Idol is Kelly Clarkson.
9. What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
This is probably where I got my '80s love song deal from but I loved listening to Delilah! I don't remember which station she was on at the time. I remember the first station I was passionate about and that was JJO. I'm STILL surprised I was lucky enough to work with the staff there.
10. What stands out the most about your first few days at Q102?
We had some sort of problem with the communication between the tower and the actual studio the day we went live. For almost a week we had to each do six hour shifts with three CD players, 24 hours a day from the actual tower! We renamed it "Dungeon Radio" and this is where I ran into my first secada. Which is a really f'n BIG bug!
Bonus Questions
If you were to share your favorite cooking recipe, what would it be?
This is my FAV of all time. Serve with a baked sweet potato (with butter and cinnamon) and sautéed spinach (with olive oil and garlic)
London Broil
Ingredients for the marinade:
3 tablespoons of soy sauce
1 tablespoon of ginger finely chopped
2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
2 tablespoons canola oil
3 tablespoons honeyFor the broil: 1 1/2 lb London Broil (flank steak)
Preheat your broiler. Whisk together the soy sauce, ginger, and garlic. Set aside for 15 minutes. While soy sauce mixture is resting, trim broil of all visible fat. Add the oil and honey to the soy sauce mixture. Whisk to combine all ingredients. Coat meat with marinade. Let marinate, covered, in the refrigerator for about an hour. Discard marinade. Place meat in a roasting pan, and broil each side for 4-6 minutes, or until done to taste.Serves 4
P.S. You can also do this in a slow cooker for about 9 hours - just don't discard the marinade or you can grill it too.
P.P.S. Guys this can get you la*d.
