Mt. Joy

“Silver Lining” is the new single from the Los Angeles-based band, Mt. Joy. They will be releasing their self-titled debut album on March 2nd via Dualtone. In this single, Mt. Joy attempt to find some solace after tragedy — in this case, the friends in his community lost too young to drugs, and the devastation they left behind. It’s a compellingly open-hearted piece of songwriting that exemplifies why Mt. Joy have found such a passionate following in little more than a year as a band.
When asked about the meaning behind the song, Mt. Joy member, Matt Quinn explains, “For this particular song, I actually wrote like half or more in college around 5 or 6 years ago in reaction to things going on in my hometown, Philadelphia. Drugs sort of took a toll on people I knew, and it happened all at once. I felt the burn of the epidemic across America. I saw a lot of young people passing away way too soon, and it was sort of a reaction to that. I was trying to find some sort of silver lining to all that had swept through my town and as we became a band here and put our crew together. We were kind of forced to come up with as many songs as we could. I went back to this song, revamped it and added some things. That one specifically is a super personal song but I feel like as time has gone on, it has become more and more universally relevant.”
Founding members Quinn (vocals/guitar) and Sam Cooper (guitar) have been making music since the early 2000s. However, it wasn't until several years ago that the two came together and began to write songs that would form the foundation of their debut album. Mt. Joy combines old-school classic rock and touches of rootsy acoustic music with vibrant, well-crafted songs that overflow with hooks, tenderness and singalong moments.
Mt. Joy are currently touring the U.S. before heading to Austin for SXSW, followed shortly after by more dates throughout the U.S.
