Flogging Molly
Feb 7, 2011
Los Angeles's Celtic-punk rockers Flogging Molly are gearing up for the release of a new studio album, produced by Ryan Hewitt (Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Avett Brothers), on their own imprint Borstal Beat Records on May 24th. The album is said to center around the "economic disaster in the U.S., and the effects it has had on the population around the world." Before the album's May release, Flogging Moggy will embark on their annual "Green 17? tour, spanning February 8th to March 19th and will culminate in a performance at Coachella on April 15th.
The band actually maintains a geographical bond with the old country, courtesy of founder, frontman, and Dublin native Dave King, a former kingpin in the heavy metal crew Fastway. King's familiarity with Irish tradition is underscored by the group's instrumental makeup, a raucous collision of guitar, fiddle, accordion, mandolin, bass, and drums. Plus, the Flogging Molly leader draws on his own roots and recollections to shape the songs' themes, from childhood memories of religious and political strife to the untimely death of his father, to his forced relocation to the United States.
The anger and defiance embedded in King has become an integral part of his band's sound, as manifested in its brash, defiant anthems.
has just released their new single "Don't Shut 'Em Down." The song revolves around this theme, as it was inspired by the words in graffiti on a wall in the Motor City and impacts Alternative on February 8th.
The band consists of: King, Bridget Regan, Dennis Casey, Nathen Maxwell, Bob Schmidt, George Schwindt, and Matt Hensley.
