Columbus, OH duo Twenty-One Pilots -- Tyler Joseph (vocals/piano) and Josh Dun (drummer) -- are gearing up to release their new album, Vessel, on January 8th on Fueled By Ramen. The album was recorded in Los Angeles with Grammy nominated producer Greg Wells (Adele, Weezer). The lead single "Holding On To You" was released on iTunes on September 11th and is being serviced to Alternative Radio on November 12th.
"The first song I ever played on the piano was my own. I never took any lessons," Joseph responds when asked about his musical background. "I looked at the piano and realized that music was a way of being able to say something; the phrase I always use is that 'music is a vessel' and that's where the album title comes from."
Over the past few years, Twenty-One Pilots have built a hardcore following from their energetic live shows No strangers to the road, the band has built a fervent national following via their electrifying live performances at innumerable headline shows and toured with Neon Trees and Walk The Moon earlier this year.
"Every show we play our hearts out because where we come from you have to grab people's attention and make sure that they never forget you," Joseph said. "In our case we were able to build up a fanbase - one that walked with us to grab the attention of the music industry outside of our hometown eventually opening up the doors that have led to so many opportunities to take our music around the world on what is an amazing journey".
Twenty-One Pilots merge elements of hip-hop, indie rock and punk in a way that's so seamless that you'll be rapping along one minute and caught up in a lush orchestral line in the next minute. "We're not trying to consciously do something different but we've just never emulated any other bands" Joseph explained. "We've never fit into any particular scene so we figured we would just make our own."
The band self-released their debut album, Regional At Best, in July 2011. A Twenty-One Pilots EP titled, Three Songs was released a year later via Fueled By Ramen in July 2012.
Twenty-One Pilots take off on a "Mostly November Tour" which includes WSUN/Tampa's "Next Big Thing" on December 1st and WXXJ/Jacksonville's 'The Big Ticket" on December 2nd.
