The 1975
Feb 10, 2013

Hailing from Manchester, England, The 1975, released Sex, a five track EP on November 19th 2012 via Vagrant Records. It is the second of three EPs; the third EP, Music For Cars, will be released March 5th. The band's first full-length album co-produced by Mike Crossey (Artic Monkeys, Foals, The Kooks) is due out in June 2013.
The group consists of Matty (vocals/guitar), Adam (guitar), George (drums), and Ross (bass). The band members originally met at school as teenagers in Manchester and began to write music in 2002. Though not originally called "The 1975", Matty chose the current name after seeing the date "1 June. The 1975" scribbled into the back page of a book of Beat Poetry he had been given by an artist who was giving away his possessions outside a farmhouse in Ibiza.
"We're not making a record to support a couple of singles," Matty says of the finished record. "On your debut album, whether you're hyped or not, you've got shitloads to prove to yourself." And his hopes for The 1975? "People need to get on board with what we're doing and see that we're for this generation. I want our music to be a part of people's lives, properly."
The 1975 grew in popularity in late 2012, after BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe played their single "Sex," which was declared the most viral track of the week in the UK on Spotify The band has been busy this past year playing shows as The Slowdown, and Drive Like I Do. Last year they embarked on a tour of the UK and Ireland that will extend through this year.
The four-piece will play their first ever live dates in the United States in March, including appearances at SXSW in Austin, and headlining in Chicago on March 20th at Subterranean and wind down on March 31st at the 96X Spring Fling in Norfolk.
The 1975 have already taken the UK by storm - a result of their amorphous drifts between brooding art rock, crisp electronica, dancefloor R&B, and 80s gloss pop - channeling a diverse range of influences including Joy Division, Alt-J, Peter Gabriel, Phoenix, and more. The 1975 are undoubtedly a band on the rise, and for good reason.
