Vance Joy
Apr 7, 2014

"Riptide" is a song by Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy. It was released as a track on his debut EP, God Loves You When You're Dancing, through Atlantic Records. It was was written by the artist, who also produced it, along with drummer Edwin White and John Castle. This upbeat indie folk song has been lyrically described as a "coming of age love story", and is known for its metaphors and pop culture references. The song was voted number 1 on the 2013 Triple J Hottest 100. Joy will be releasing his first full length as yet untitled album out sometime later this year. The songs on this EP began as a collection of loose threads, which over time naturally weaved together, like they were always meant to find a life of their own.
After earning a degree in law, James Keogh (better known as Vance Joy) went on to discover that his true passion really was music. Like the unforced orchestration of his songs, Vance Joy's recent success developed organically. Earning his chops on Melbourne's open mic circuit, he tested out new material at venues like the iconic Great Britain Hotel in Richmond. Naturally, his music attracted fans, press and label interest. Before long, the musician played sold out Australian tours and penned a deal with Liberation Music in Australia, Atlantic Records for the rest of the world, and Infectious Music for the UK.
He's supported Of Monsters and Men, Julia Stone, Bernard Fanning locally, Lissie & Tom Odell across the USA, and headlined sold out Canada & UK shows. More recently, Vance Joy played at SXSW in March and his February-April tour of Europe and U.S. has been sold out.
