A 3-day holiday weekend or even taking a vacation this time of year can put extra stress on you and your team. I’ve heard it time and time again that a few 14-hour days to voice track ahead or get music logs done is almost not worth taking the vacation. Then, there’s over a hundred emails to sludge through when you get back.
BUSY. BUSY. BUSY.
You don’t have to walk up and down the halls of too many radio stations to realize that many people are overworked and on the verge of burnout, even outside of vacation preparation. If busy is the cultural expectation, the expected norm at your station, there’s a good chance that you’re missing some very important signs from your team.
Take that picture as an example. Is the “sidewalk ends” sign really needed since the sidewalk actually ends? Imagine if the sidewalk were a cliff. Are you so busy that you would just simply walk off?
If your head is down reading emails and texts on your cell as you walk the halls, I wonder how many signs you’re missing. If you’re in leadership, you’re actually in the people business first.
TRY THESE 3 IDEAS WHEN YOU GET BACK FROM VACATION
- Schedule three times every day to take a 10-minute stroll around the office.
- Pick a teammate once a week to purposefully engage deeper with--in their space, not yours.
- Leave a $5 gift card on a teammate’s chair once a month. Better yet make it anonymous.
RESULTS ARE WORTH THE EFFORT
If you take me up on these three ideas, I can almost guarantee that your relationships will deepen, trust will be built, and you’ll see some obvious and not-so-obvious signs that you would’ve missed otherwise. This extra effort will make you a better leader and also improve the office culture. Good luck!
