Instead of reading through this entire article for the answer of how to become more memorable and build more fans, here’s the answer in four words:
A UNIQUE BRAND DIAMOND
Whether it’s your radio station or show, a unique brand diamond can make you stand out and give you guardrails for consistency.
See, every memorable character in books, on stage, television, or in movies has a unique brand diamond (think baseball diamond).
THE OPPOSITE OF LOVE ISN’T HATE
Remember that the opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s indifference. So, not every listener will fall in love with you. But with a unique brand diamond they’ll definitely know you very well.
Think Seinfeld. You can predict how Kramer and George will react in any given situation. Why? Because both characters have character consistency.
LET’S DIVE IN
I was exposed to the concept of a unique brand diamond by Tim Miles of Tim Miles & Company who was exposed by Hollywood screenwriter instructor David Freeman. Before becoming the Executive VP of Walt Disney Television, David taught a Beyond Structure class that examined the power of values that shape the way characters think, act, and see the world.
New York Times Bestselling author, Brian Eisenberg of Buyer Legends also has great insights on the topic.
HERE ARE YOUR NEXT STEPS
Now that I’ve given credit to where credit is due here’s how to find your unique brand diamond:
- Go to the 3-5 closest people in your life and ask them this question, “Describe me in one word.” You’ll get many words, and that’s very common. It’s exactly what you want.
- Look at your list of words, combine any similar characteristics, and then choose your 4 strongest traits.
- Draw a baseball diamond and place each word on a corner.
Now, you have your unique brand diamond that can help guide your show prep, opinions, reactions, marketing, and social media posts ...the values that shape the way you think, act, and see the world ...consistently.
As an example, here are mine:
3 SIMILAR AND 1 OPPOSITE
A well-defined persona will have three similar traits and one skewed opposite. Fun, passionate, and quirky are closely aligned, whereas cynical is my skewed opposite …the trait that can easily derail any conversation or situation.
When I was on the air, I brought my unique brand diamond with me into the studio. It helped me to stay true to my most memorable personality traits, which made it easier for listeners to get to know me, deepen relationships, and make fans.
