This week the headlines read that American superstar gymnast Simone Biles pulled herself out of Olympic competition to focus on her mental health. I’m not quite sure why, but for whatever reason this has become a polarizing topic. She’s an elite athlete who trained tirelessly for years to just quit? Not a chance. Biles posted on her social media that she felt the weight of the world on her shoulders. Yes, stress and pressure impact every single part of your being. Sound familiar?

If you’re a superstar in radio and your amazing worth keeps you overly busy, you’re not alone. Radio has always been an industry where people have worn many different hats causing them to work long hours. Now throw in the past 18 months of extra pressure, fear and intensity. Yes, life can feel overwhelming, and there are signs that you need a break.
Think about your car. You just can’t drive it for 200,000 miles without adding gas, getting a few oil changes and a tune-up. Now, think about you. You can’t live day in and day out for months without proper rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation.
PERMISSION TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
Whether it’s fear that a co-worker will become more valuable while you’re away, or you just have control issues, please realize that it’s very unhealthy to constantly sacrifice for your job. Don’t misunderstand what I’m saying. I’m not giving you advice to coast at your job. What I am gifting you is the permission to take care of yourself.
BE INSPIRED BY SIMONE BILES
Your future self needs you to take care of your current self as soon as possible. If you feel physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually unwell, you’re not doing anyone any favors by grinding through it. That includes yourself, your family, and your coworkers. Yes, your team and job need you, but your well-being should be a higher priority. Don’t overthink this. Have courage to step away. Recharge. Go on vacation.
In case you missed it, here’s what Simone Biles said later in the week, “The outpouring love and support I’ve received has made me realize I’m more than my accomplishments and gymnastics which I never truly believed before.”
You too are more than your value and identity at work.
