When Fashion Unexpectedly Helped Work Culture

Whether it’s downsizing, quarantining, or working from home it seems like teams have never been more physically separated than now. Yet many leaders, along with teammates, have a strong desire to have a healthy company culture.
A GREAT CULTURE DOESN’T JUST MAGICALLY HAPPEN
A few years ago, I worked at a radio station where company culture became a priority after we learned that our #1 customer was each other, the team. As a matter of fact, company culture became a line item in the budget. “Team Fun” was created to plan and surprise the team with events and activities that co-workers actually looked forward to attending.
We had chili cook-offs, euchre tournaments (Midwest people know this card game), ice cream parties, Starbucks runs, movie lunches… the fun went on and on. All of these things were done on company time. All of these things were an investment to helping grow a close-knit team.
WHEN MY PREDICTABLE OUTFIT BECAME A TEAM RALLYING POINT
I bought a pair of camouflage pants and wore them every Friday. People started noticing… even making fun of me. I embraced that. As a matter of fact, I convinced many on the team to take a trip to the Army Surplus store to pick up their own camouflage. Understandably, many in the office preferred a more stylish shirt, so they ordered one on Amazon so that they could participate too.
CAMO FRIDAY WAS BORN
It may not have directly increased sales or helped song rotations be more consistent, but Camo Friday captured the spirit of what it meant to belong together as a team in a workplace setting.
Below is a picture from my final day, a Friday, at 104.9 the River in Columbus, Ohio. Notice anything?
Camo Camaraderie. We worked hard together and played hard together.
