Maybe you’re trying to figure out if the worst advice came from your program director. Odds are it didn’t, but that shouldn’t stop you from reading.
SO, WHAT’S THE WORST ADVICE?
In a nutshell, someone shared with me that they were essentially told: don’t share your opinions and don’t talk about yourself; it’s all about the listener. Literally, DJs at this radio station are not allowed to talk about themselves. Ever.
Is this PD correct by saying that it‘s all about the listener? Yes.
Is this PD correct by saying that a DJ shouldn‘t talk about themselves or share their opinion? No.
This is a poisonous strategy for Contemporary Christian radio.
SO, WHAT’S THE ANTIDOTE?
According to dictionary.com an antidote is “a medicine taken or given to counteract a particular poison.”
Many CCM stations rely on P1 fans to listen longer (TSL) and listen again (Occasions) in order to impact AQH Share ratings. They also depend on these super fans to financially support the radio station. So, listeners must get to know station brands and personalities in order to go deeper in the relationship, and that’s accomplished through transparency and shared values.
Here’s the antidote: trust is built on relationships and relationships are built through sharing…especially at Contemporary Christian radio.
