As you gather with family and friends for Thanksgiving there’s one phrase you never want to hear. Imagine sitting down at the dinner table with all the turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, and cranberry sauce eloquently displayed in front of you. Everyone at the table is doing their best to dish the amazing spread onto their plate.
Then, it happens. Someone at the table says to you, “Please say grace and use your radio voice!” You outwardly smile and laugh it off, but on the inside, you wish that you could take your plate and sit on a folding chair in the freezing garage and eat there.
That exact scenario never happened to me, but I’ve had family and friends ask about my ‘radio voice’ in my career. Maybe you have as well. I decided to do something about it.
3 WAYS TO STOP USING YOUR ‘RADIO VOICE’
- If you don’t need to wear headphones …don’t. There’s something about hearing yourself talk naturally.
- If you must hear the songs try to keep one ear off the headphones. This will help you hear the music yet hear your natural voice.
- Mix the two options above. Put the headphones around your neck, pivot one headphone out, and simply turn up the volume. I got to a point in my career where this helped me sound like the real me.
HERE’S THE TAKEAWAY
It’s adjusting little things like this that make the big impact over time. More comfortable. More natural. More real.
