Here’s something to consider if you’ve lost some joy of being on the radio.
A few shows that I coach have felt very consumable and memorable recently. That means they’ve not wasted the listener’s time, and they’ve revealed something about themselves during each on-air break …I call that dropping crumbs of connection. Let’s dive a little deeper.
BEING CONSUMABLE
Picture yourself plopping down on your favorite spot on the couch with a family-size bar of Hershey’s dark chocolate while binge watching Netflix. You break off square after square, devouring the entire family-size bar midway through episode two. You’d probably feel guilty and a tad sick.
Your on-air breaks should feel like a couple of squares of dark chocolate. It’s a little treat for listeners. Don’t shove the entire family-size bar in their face. Leave them wanting more.
BEING MEMORABLE
In 2021, I was coaching someone secretly; they had personally hired me to improve and grow. After several weeks, this person’s boss told them to stop talking about themselves and to focus on the listener. The boss was half correct… it is all about the listener, but it’s also about injecting your unique point of view.
If you start with the right topic and then hook the listener with a bring-in line, you can then funnel down to your POV without it feeling like it’s all about you. Connection happens through shared emotions and life circumstances.
HERE’S THE TAKEAWAY
The solo and team shows I mentioned at the beginning all had one thing in common. It wasn’t their experience, since that ranges from just 6 months to 30+ years. The tangible thing they all had in common was some of the very best audio I’ve ever heard from them. They were consistently hitting on all cylinders, and you could just feel it.
Consumable + Memorable + Consistent = Powerful Connection
That’s a winning combination for ratings, sales, and financial support. But more importantly it does wonders for the on-air talent who walks in the studio and closes the door behind them. Confidence soars and the joy of being on the radio oozes from the microphone.
