Think about the last time you binged something online. Some people “accidentally” watch a whole season of a new series on Netflix in one weekend. Others will pick up their phone to reply to an email, open Instagram, and not realize an hour has gone by. Guilty as charged on both counts.
The other night I got lost on YouTube. It was a trip down memory lane watching videos from Toad The Wet Sprocket, Spin Doctors, and Crowded House. I came across a 60 Minutes Australia clip about Crowded House getting the band back together. It was a great piece; watch it here after you finish reading if you’d like.
CROWDED HOUSE WROTE THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE
Lead singer, Neil Finn, has two sons who joined the band. One of the sons, Liam, said something at 10:23 into the video that was extremely profound. “These songs have traveled and become a part of their relationships with their parents and their kids …sometimes there’s three generations of people in the audience.”
That got me thinking about the opportunity for growth when on-air personalities are mindful of the different generations listening. Imagine being purposeful to honor the older crowd, appeal to the younger, and also super-serving the target.
Your radio station or show can literally be known for conversations and music that bridge 3 generations. I coach several younger DJs and a new artist, and I’ve challenged them to be relevant to not only a 20-something, but also their mom and grandma’s generations. There’s power and benefits in sharing content with wider appeal.
HERE’S THE TAKEAWAY
You might be a generation behind or a generation ahead or your station’s target audience. No matter how old you are you have the unique opportunity to attract different generations to your radio station or show. Here are 3 ideas how:
1. Think wide welcome mat into your radio station or show.
2. Super-serve your target audience without excluding anyone else.
3.
