First, let’s talk about the elephant in the room. This is the third food article in a row that I’ve written. Not sure why, but I do feel better confessing that to you.
Think about a bad food memory from childhood. Maybe a parent forced you to eat liver & onions, or you got food poisoning.
My bad food memory was in third grade. The classes from Gibbs Elementary in Canton, Ohio went on a field trip to a local dairy factory. The tour took us on a journey of how they made milk, cheese, sour cream, and cottage cheese. It must’ve been winter because what happened next was a memory seared into this nine-year-old’s mind.
The thirty of us came to the part of the tour where we found ourselves looking down into a huge vat of cottage cheese. It literally filled the entire room below us. Then it happened. One of my friends, Keisha, leaned over the railing and her Cleveland Browns stocking cap fell into the cottage cheese.
My eyes got real big right around the same time that noticeable gasps filled the room. One of the workers dressed in all white and wearing a protective hair net fished out the stocking cap. Needless to say, I avoided cottage cheese for many years.
HERES THE TAKEAWAY
Storytelling that evokes memories makes connection points between you and the listener. Real life stories transcend the simple task of back selling, front selling, and talking about the latest celebrity news.
When the song ends, grab the listeners attention, set up the topic as quickly as you can, and get to the meat of the break where the story unfolds. Use colorful adjectives that activate the listeners’ right-brained imagination. Then, exit well. That’s one way to build a fanbase with a side of cottage cheese.
