The Scarcity Of Encouragement

Radio is a competitive space, not only with the station across town, but at times with co-workers. So, it can be easier to protect your own ego and job security than to let your guard down and freely give encouragement.
Recently, someone in radio had asked for my opinion, so we exchanged a few emails back and forth. I thought that they were on the right track, so I pointed out their intuition and direction. Here’s how they responded:
“By the way your last line from your email to me kind of made me tear up. It has been years since someone in radio said they were proud of me. That means so much more than ‘good job.’ I needed that today.”
I don’t know about you, but that really stopped me in my tracks. I guess my words have powerful meaning. Yours do too!
HERES THE TAKEAWAY
Imagine the look on their face if you praised a co-worker today. Picture how your main competition would feel if you sent them an Edible Arrangement after a great ratings book. I realize that last one sounds counterintuitive. But maybe the culture of radio would be a better place because you and I became known as encouragers.
