When a new song or album show up for radio stations to play that’s not the beginning of the story. That’s actually a few chapters into the journey. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look into the heart of Artist Management, and really servant leadership principles that apply to anyone in leadership.
Having the right heart as an artist manager towards an artist’s overall life, relationships, and ministry is one of the most critical aspects of artist management. Matthew 23:11-12 states “The greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Like Matthew 23:11-12 suggests, an artist manager must place the artist's interests above his own in humility if an artist is to fulfill their calling.
It is a great honor to be called by God and allowed to work towards the dreams, vision and life of an artist. This relationship should be led by love, caring deeply about each step an artist takes along their journey. Loving an artist well goes beyond their success in music, but also how they grow as a person, grow in character and leadership qualities. It is crucial that love and an awe that God meant since the beginning of time for you to serve and work for this person is the foundation that I believe God intends to be set for the relationship of manager to artist.
As long as the true north of your “why you do what you do” is coming from a place of care and love for the artist, their life and ministry, and a desire to serve others in excellence using your God given talents, relationships, wisdom, and gifts, a long lasting and eternally prosperous relationship between artist and manager can grow into a relationship that not only effects generations for the Kingdom but also shows an industry and all who encounter the ministry that the manager and artist know God in a mature way based on how they love and support one another.
