Why All Artists Love Carmen Brown

I really don't like mentioning names within our industry here. But this post can't be written without a great example.
Ever wondered why artists seemingly always write, Twitter or blog about being in Tampa? I've got the answer. Carmen Brown cares. No more. No less.
I can't give credit to Carmen alone. She and the ENTIRE team at WJIS (THE JOY-FM) roll out the red carpet for any artist that comes by. She genuinely cares and invests in their lives. Many times spending the night away from her family to hang with artists. Now that's dedication (and a very understanding family)!
"But they have a big market." "The JOY staff is huge." "They're in Florida."
Quit making excuses. I don't want to hear it.
Put yourself in the artist's shoes. When an artist comes by, do you feel like you're doing all you can to show her, him or them a great time and be hospitable? Are you sharing all the resources of your station to make sure the visit maximizes everyone's time?
Then imagine where you'd be without the artists. Scary, isn't it?
Next time an artist comes through town, redefine how you "roll out the red carpet." Get the entire staff involved. Invest in the artists beyond just playing their records on the air. Make sure your audience knows that every artist visit, interview or concert is important to you and it will become important to your audience.
The Beatles might have said it best with "all you need is love."
