1. Tell us a little bit about your musical journey and how you connected with Fervent Records.
People say this, but it was a TOTAL God thing. 100 percent! I've grown up singing, writing, acting, dancing because it was always what I felt called to. I have been involved in music and ministry at my church since I was 8. When I started leading worship as a teen, I fell in love with the kids and the lifestyle of what worship really is. Getting a guitar when I was 13 and an "unplugged" Lauryn Hill record was also how I most began to develop as an artist. Leading a band on a weekly basis and discovering the whole purpose and power of music was the best training ever. At 18, on my to-do list was to be signed by a label. I was so desperate to do what was in my heart, but I wasn't ready. Instead I knew I was supposed to focus more on worship and grounding myself on what mattered most.
While leading worship at our church one day, a lady was sitting in the back. Unbeknownst to me, she worked for an organization named Praise Charts. She shared my music with Susan Riley. I get a call from Susan and she said, "Tell me what you want to do." After pouring out my heart and hearing hers, it was clear that God had placed us in each other's lives to work together. She signed me as a writer and two years later she introduced me to my label Fervent Records. Knowing I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be and working with the most amazing team makes me pinch myself frequently. God is beyond faithful.
2. What is the story behind your debut single "Suitcases"?
I have held on to things from my past that just weighed me down almost as if they were treasure. Not realizing that baggage can keep me from my future. I want people to daily discover that freedom is available through Christ: "Can you imagine, what it's like to be free'? Just run." This chorus is my reminder to lay aside every weight of the past and live free.
3. Is there a particular message or theme to the songs on "You Got My Attention"?
Freedom, redemption and the hope of something more that is available and waiting on all of us to discover. Love is my platform. Real love, God's love changes everything and that's what I pray people experience as they listen.
4. You recently took a radio promo trip, yes? Do you have any humorous, inspiring or interesting stories from visits with radio stations? Any favorite stops along the way?
I have been on two months' worth of radio touring! I have way too many great stories and have been having a blast. I've met amazing new friends, eaten probably a little too much and been privileged to be a part of the lives of their listeners. Favorite stops have been Corey Mann at Pulse FM, because he's hysterical first off, and also because I had no idea that the headquarters of Pulse FM is also Lesea Broadcasting, which was founded by Lester Sumrall. I have been listening to his teaching since I was a little girl and had all of his books. His ministry changed my life and to be in the very place that it all started, plus the fact that I did my first on-air interview at that station, was a bit overwhelming. I cried. It was awesome and so special.
In addition Scott Smith from K-LOVE invited us to his house. We sat with him and his beautiful friends and family, ate Mexican food, talked about the things we were most passionate and I got to sing a little bit. I love simple joys in life and this was just that, perfect.
5. Do you have a favorite song on the new album?
"Yours Forever" is my response to the relentless love of God, the Father that has been in pursuit of us since the beginning of time. I think about the Father of the prodigal son, not just standing at the door of the house, but running down to meet his child and welcome him home. Love would not exist without God and this love has saved my life, my response is, "I'm Yours Forever".
6. Who inspires you personally, spiritually and/or professionally?
My parents are my rock; they taught me how to love. They showed me how to cultivate a relationship with Jesus Christ. They told me I could do anything and never said, "Get a day job," but instead said, "Always do what's in your heart." For me, my dad is the picture of God the Father's love and he is my hero. My sister is my #1 fan and I am hers in return. My family is my inspiration. God and my family is why I am who I am.
7. What song (any song from any time) do you wish you had written?
"Amazing Grace." God's grace alone has saved me, kept me and redeemed me. I want nothing more but to give my life daily to the one who gave everything.
8. If you could do anything (any job) outside the music business, what would you do?
It's a tie between personal trainer because I love fitness and nutrition, and an event planner because I LOVE to entertain and make a room visually come to life.
9. Fill in the blank: I can't start the day without
My green drink, coffee and vitamins.
10. Do you have much time to check out other artists' music? What are you listening to right now?
I am such a fan and try to show as much support as possible! My worship playlist: Hillsong, David Crowder Band, Jesus Culture, Kari Jobe, and Shane & Shane is always on repeat. I'm also currently listening to Adele's new record, ridiculous!
