(editor's note...Question and Answer session with Jody McBrayer)
1. Intro/Synopsis
I grew up in a small town called Riverview, FL that is a suburb of Tampa. I graduated from East Bay high school....home of the fighting Indians! I worked at several places when I was in high school, including working at McDonald's for a week, but it started to break out my face so I quit. LOL! I also worked at Marshall's department store for two years. I've lived in Alabama, California, Virginia and Florida. However, I currently reside in Franklin Tennessee where I've lived for nearly 23 years. The longest period of time I've lived anywhere, including the town I grew up in.
2. What does a normal day at home look like for you?
My day usually starts at 5 a.m., and I like to go to cycle class from 5:30 to 6:30. I come home and my wife, Stephanie, and I get my daughter ready for school and I drive the carpool. We are on the road quite a bit so when I'm home there's usually a lot to do around the house. I also do session work occasionally.
3. What's the song that you just can't get out of your head right now?
I love ALL kinds of music. A friend of mine shared with me a compilation recording of the works of Ennio Morricone. The "Giuseppe Tornatore Suite: Malena" has a haunting melody that I keep listening to over and over again and I find myself humming it. The man is brilliant!
4. How much do you travel, what are the challenges?
I'm traveling every weekend usually. The biggest challenge for me is getting enough solid sleep. A full 8, uninterrupted hours. It's nearly impossible.
5. How do you juggle life on the road with wanting to be home?
There seems to be a balance most of the time, especially if it's only for a few days. The hard part is when you're gone for more than a week. I start to miss my girls. So when I'm home, I spend as much time as possible with them.
6. What Artist or Pastor has had the greatest impact on you?
So many! Pastor Tim Johnson at Orlando World Outreach has probably had the most profound influence on my life. Also, the music and lyrics of Nichole Nordeman always move me and make me think.
7. Funniest or most embarrassing moment on the road?
When I was traveling with Avalon, we were at a large church in Dallas, TX. During soundcheck, there was a large set of stairs that went down from the stage into the audience. Needless to say, when the concert began someone removed the steps but neglected to inform us. I ended up face-planting in the lap of the woman on the first row. Good times.
8. What organization/service group are you affiliated with?
We've just started a partnership with an organization called the Dalit Freedom Network. They work to end slavery, child persecution and exploitation in India by building schools and teaching about Jesus Christ.
9. Person you'd most like to have a discussion with, living or dead.....Deities are excused from this question
Adele. I'm moved by her music and voice. She seems like she'd be a blast to chat and hang out with.
10. Favorite Bible Verse....life verse?
Psalm 103: 2-5
Because I truly believe the fact that He "forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases. Who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion. Who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagles." That is exactly what God has done and is doing in my life. It's more than my life verse, it's my anthem.
Bonus Questions
1. How & when did you become a believer?
My father led me to the Lord when I was 16 years old. He was such an amazing example of Christ and such a great giver of grace. I'm so thankful that he is a part of that moment and memory.
2. What's the biggest "God moment" you've ever experienced? Personally or professionally, when has God shown up in a powerful way?
Wow. This is a long one, but the extremely short version is that while traveling in Africa I saw a completely blind woman regain her sight, right before my eyes. Before that, I was having a severe crisis of faith and belief. It was like God was saying to me, "Oh no you don't! I've got too much invested in you. THIS IS WHO I AM!!" Changed my calling and my life forever.
