NAME:Betsy Boyer JonesTITLE:Manager, National PromotionCOMPANY:EMI CMGFORMATS:AC/CHRLOCATION:Brentwood, TNBORN:Kansas City, MO on February 28, 1984RAISED:Shawnee, KS
Brief Career Synopsis:
I moved to Nashville in 2002 to attend Belmont University. While there I worked at an artist management company called Alabaster Arts (Jennifer Knapp, O.C. Supertones, The Wedding, Relient K, Sarah Kelly, Ginny Owens, etc.). Then I got a job working as a personal assistant to Plumb and did some freelance work for a company called Patton House Entertainment. Throughout, I did a fair share of fashion styling for music videos and photo shoots.
1) What made you want to get into the music business?
I love music and I've always been fascinated by the influence that it has on people and culture. There's something special about great songs and how they can put a person's heart into words and make he or she feel and/or think a certain way. So I was just drawn to it. More the music than the business, but I quickly learned you can't really have one without the other.
2) Of the artists on your roster, what are you most looking forward to in working with them?
They're all great. I'm looking forward to seeing Starfield break to radio. I'm excited to see what brilliance comes out of Bethany Dillon next (personal fav). I can't wait for Mandisa's latest single to climb the chart. [Smile] I could go on and on.
3) You haven't been there very long but what do you like most about your job? The least?
Most: I love making all these wonderful new friends at radio! Getting paid to talk on the phone with fun people really works for me. Least: Being picked on by my bald co-workers. Ha!
4) What are some promotions that you guys are working on right now that you're excited about?
Well, the three of us promoters here at EMI are being "promoted" to offices (as opposed to our current countertops)! This is most definitely the most exciting promotion going on in our department. [Smile]
5) Who has had the biggest impact on your life spiritually, personally and/or professionally?
Spiritually: Dave Boyer (my dad). The most joyful and selfless man I know. He has been the most incredible picture of Christ's love for so many others and me. He loves deeply, is a servant, gives everything he has and is grateful in every situation. And he's helped me to understand my worth as a daughter of the King. HUGE blessing.
Personally: My husband Seth. He fought for my heart and has become the best friend I've ever had. He is so many things I want to be and constantly inspires and challenges me. Not to mention, he makes me laugh and helps me to not take life too seriously. I never fathomed I could have so much fun with a person and love someone so deeply and unconditionally.
6) If you could have any job outside the music business, what would it be?
Something in the fashion industry. I'd be a designer and/or a stylist.
7) What book have you read that touched you or taught you the most?
Best book I've ever read is Francine Rivers' "Redeeming Love." Everyone should read this, men and women alike. Also I'm currently reading "The Same Kind of Different as Me" and it's really good.
8) What's your favorite part about the Nashville? How long have you live been there?
Been in Nashville for 6 years. I love all of the creativity in this town and I love the community here. Everybody's friends with everybody. It's the most wonderful place to live (although I'm a Kansan at heart)!
9) What's been the best piece of advice that you've ever received?
This is a tough one but I'd say that some GREAT advice would be, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path." We've all heard it, but seriously that's good stuff.
10) What's something that you really hope to get out of this job other than a gold star from Grant Hubbard?
I hope to become better prepared for whatever is next in my life career-wise. I want to break multiple new artists to radio. I'd love to better become an effective "mover and shaker" in this industry.
Bonus Questions
1) What are you listening to right now?
New Natasha Bedingfield, new Dave Barnes and Brooke Fraser's "Albertine"
2) Do you have musical guilty pleasures?
Hanson is on my iPod but I'm not embarrassed. They're actually really talented.
3) Cat or dog person?
Big dogs
4) If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three things would you want with you, and why?
My husband (b/c I love him and he's a hunter), my guitar (so we can play music), and my MacBook (as long as I can have Internet access, and hmm, don't know how I'd charge it though!)
