Stand Up (Flicker Records, 2002)1) Give us a brief recap of the Everyday Sunday musical journey:
We signed with Flicker Records in 2002 and did two records with them, really good people. We had some line-up changes in the last couple of years, guys getting married and what not. We've still been touring hard. And now we're signed with Inpop and got the chance to make our dream record with them.
2) What are the band member's different personality traits?
I, Trey, am the one who gets everything done and makes sure that everyone shows up on time and knows what city we're in. I guess I have to be responsible though we all have blast together and are very easy-going. Jesse is by far the crazy comic relief. Everyone loves being around him and drawn to his personality. Aaron is the driven one and you can always count on him to get things done. Brandon and Kevin are the fun, carefree guys of the band.
3) What's the story behind the single "Find Me Tonight"?
All of the songs mean so much to me, but this one means the most to me, lyrically. It's asking God to find in whatever situation you are, but it's come to mean more than that. A while back I was reading in 2 Chronicles 16:9, "For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him." It's something that several months before God laid on our manager's heart and he shared with us in one of our devotionals. As I was praying about this song and thinking about it, as I was doing that, I came across that verse and thought about God's eyes ranging, looking for his people so he can give them strength. I thought that maybe he would find me as my heart was committed and give me strength. And for Christians, God said he would find his people that are fully committed to him.
4) What's the message behind the new album, "Wake Up! Wake Up!"?
The idea behind the record is about getting out of this bored state that Christians seem to be in and that God has an adventure set before us, a journey. We need to quit going through the motions. There is so much that God has for us to experience, so many adventures.
5) Between now and the release date, what needs to be checked off your to-do list?
Let's see, get another No. 1 hit single [smile]. We are finishing our pre-release tour and then we start the "Generation Rising" tour with Superchick and a bunch of other great bands. We need to get our RV and trailer fixed to get to the West Coast. (We lost a wheel off the trailer and had a problem with our serpentine belt.)
6) What's your favorite part about coming off the road?
I love being on the road. I love traveling to different cities. But I hate being away from family, friends and my church. I myself am a sponsor in our youth group. I love being super involved in that and I'm just really passionate about teens and youth ministry. So, I love being home for that but mostly just spending time with family, friends and my girlfriend.
7) What compels you to write a song?
Jesus. [smile] Everything and anything that I'm going through with friends, life experiences, struggles, tough times, my relationship with God and wanting to write songs for him. I write songs about life and what I'm going through and hopefully if I'm keeping God in that center of what I do, that will come across in what I'm writing about. Some songs are more worshipful than others, but I don't think in terms of writing a Christian song or not a Christian song. I don't' think in that way, this one is and this one isn't. If you're writing from that center it's all inspired for God's glory.
8) Which do you prefer: the performance or the process?
I think the performance because that means we finally finished the songs and get to play them for people. But I also like the actual recording and getting to the finished product. I guess that could be performing for the record.
9) Who are you musical inspirations?
We all have different ones, obviously. But personally, it would be MxPx, Seven Day Jesus, All Star United, newsboys, dc Talk. I love all kinds of music, power pop/modern rock with lots of energy, and the punk influence like MxPx to Relient K, Underoath and Blindside, Anberlin. And then there's Hillsong United!
10) Do you have any funny radio stories?
One of our first singles early on was called "Hanging On," and people kept referring to it as "Hanging by a Moment," which was, of course, actually by Lifehouse.
