Brief Career Synopsis:
This is my first radio gig. I used to be a waitress at Red Robin. Would you like more fries?
1) What was your first job in radio?
You're lookin' at it! This IS my first job in radio. I came here fresh out of college. I wasn't even trying to get into the radio business, actually. I was simply a fan of Spirit 105.3 and would listen to the morning show everyday. I didn't want a job; I just wanted to meet Scott and Sam (KCMS morning team).
2) How do you prepare for your show each day? What is your biggest challenge?
My life is show prep. I'm an overprotective first-time mother of a beautiful 10-month-old girl. I haven't had a full night's sleep in a year. My husband is always spouting out the latest news headlines and wacky stories, so I'm never at a loss for a new bit. My biggest challenge is shutting up.
3) What is your most memorable on-air moment?
I was about six months pregnant and we had Brandon Heath performing in studio. He belted out "I'm Not Who I Was" and I burst into tears. Blame it on the hormones.
4) If you were just starting out in radio today, but you knew what you know now, would you continue forward?
ABSOLUTELY!
5) Who has been your favorite artist interview?
I am a horrible interviewer because I'm such a fan. I'm like Chris Farley on "Saturday Night Live." I'm basically like, "Hi, Nichole Nordeman. How are you? You remember that one time at that one concert when you sang 'Every Season?' Yeah, that was awesome."
6) Who are some upcoming artists or songs that you're excited about?
I can't wait for the new Sara Groves album. I found out she was coming to our area in December and I fell out of my chair.
7) If you could imagine yourself working outside the music business, what would you like to try your hand at?
I want to have 11 kids, maybe 12. So I think I'd just be pregnant all the time. Have you seen Jon and Kate plus 8? They are my heroes.
8) Who has had the biggest impact on your life? Why?
My mom. She's always looking to help the underdog. You know, the black sheep of the family or the child being picked on at recess or the newcomer in the back of the church. I just watch my mom live her life and try to follow in her footsteps.
9) What book have you read that has taught you the most?
My friend Joey called me a few years ago and left this voicemail: "Sarah. Go to the bookstore. Are you in the car? Go now. Buy a book called 'Blue Like Jazz' by Donald Miller." I'm also enjoying "Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey and "Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay."
10) What is the most precious memory of your life so far?
I was sitting in church a few years ago and the pastor was talking about building an addition to our church. He asked each of us to pray about what we should give. I was a poor college student, so I asked God to do a miracle. Two weeks later I ended up on "Wheel of Fortune's College Week" from Seattle. I won cash and prizes totaling $11,500. I knew that was God's answer. When I passed the check onto the church, I told my dad the story. My dad hadn't been in church in 20 years. When he found out what I did, he said: "I'm rededicating my life to the Lord." The next Sunday I sat with my dad in the pew for the first time in my life.
