Intermission to the Moon (2007)1) Introduce the band members using personality traits and musical background.
Reid handles the keys and vocals. He's 6'1" and is Mr. Impersonations. He only lets us buy things that are $0.99 or less. He's the tardy one and a narcoleptic.
Garrett plays guitar. He is the dawdler of the band and needs Starbucks everyday. He claims to not eat any fast food. He is always positive.
Chris plays guitar. He experiences road rage and is the best at backing up the trailer. He has the most contagious, addictive laugh, is a neat freak and serves at the band Mom & Dad.
2) Give us a brief rundown of your journey as a band from start to Tooth & Nail.
Reid and Garrett were in a band in high school before coming together as A Dream Too Late. They played locally and became friends with Falling Up through a mutual friend (Chris' fiancée). After signing with management, they got their foot in the door with Tooth & Nail. All in two years!
3) What can we expect on the debut record musically and lyrically?
Musically, there is a different sound from other Tooth & Nail bands. There is a U2 influence and it has a real spacey rock sound to go along with the whole outer space theme. Lyrically, it's real honest and inspirational, saying this is who we are, looking over our past experiences and using that to motivate kids where they are.
4) What's the underlying message you'll be trying to convey with the new record?
It's in the title, "Intermission to the Moon." This life here is a pause, a stop along the way, as you shoot for the stars. It's a chance to assess where you're at in life.
5) Which do you enjoy more: the process (songwriting, recording) or the performance?
Garrett: Writing is fun but I like to bring it on stage and reach the kids.
Chris: It's a toss up between writing and recording. I love creating but I love crafting, too. I like collaborating with everyone. In the creative process I do like to watch the process come to a set of full songs.
Reid: Performing, I want to make sure people get their money's worth.
6) What urges you to make music? Is it only about the music or about what the listeners/fans get out of it?
Starting off, it was about the music, before we came together as this band. But then we came to a point where it seemed selfish to go out and do something without a purpose. There is no reason why sleeping in van, eating poorly or being away from family is a good idea if there isn't a bigger purpose to this band. We want to be a bridge to share our beliefs and deep love for God and to be a family to each other.
7) Did you have any "ah-ha" moments in the studio, where you thought, "OK, now we have a record"?
When we started in the studio, we made scratch tracks for all the songs with just guitar and vocals. That was the first time we'd ever done that. They sounded so rough and it kind of scared us, but as we went through the process and added everything else, we saw it come together. The "big bang" came at the end.
8) What's your favorite song to play live? Why?
Chris: "Trendsetter" because it's a great live song that I can dance to.
Garrett: "Do You Believe in Ghosts" because in our set list we go from a real groovy song into this one that has almost a hard sound. I love the transition.
Reid: "14th & Knott"
9) Any interesting or funny experiences/stories from radio stops yet?
Not really. So far we've only been to Radio U in Ohio.
10) You guys are from Oregon so can you tell us where the "Oregon Trail" actually leads?
There were a group of people looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. They were called Rainbow Chasers. Off they went on this search party to look for the pot of gold. They came to Oregon.
