POSITION:Morning Co-Host/Network MD Way FMSTATION:Way FMMARKET:Nashville TN!!! & Various AffiliatesCOMPANY:Way FMBORN:12/15/68RAISED:Southern California, but call Yakima, WA home!
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started out at KPLU-FM in Seattle, where I learned from some of the best! From there, I went to KFFM in Yakima, WA followed by time at KXDD The Hawk. Then I headed WYYL in Memphis, WAIB in Tallahassee, FL, WPKR in Oshkosh, WI and KFDI in Wichita, Kansas before, getting here to my new home WAY FM in Nashville!!
1. What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
My first radio gig was weekend/overnights at KPLU FM In Tacoma, WA. I did everything...and was just happy to be there! I grew up listening to Shauna on KLOS in LA. I wanted to be her or Rita Wilde. I loved Uncle Joe Benson, also from KLOS, and to this day still get excited when I hear my old airchecks of Bo Roberts, Steve Slaton, and Jon Ballard from KISW and KXRX. Seattle Radio in the late 80's ROCKED!
2. Describe your role on the morning show.?
If I'm doing my job right, I should be saying what the listener is thinking. I like to think I'm the audience...sort of "every woman"...The friend, co-worker and sister.
3. What has made your show successful?
Amazing Partners!! Dewey Boynton at KXDD taught me so much and Carson "Cash" Cornell taught me how to just have fun again. Dan Tooker and Colby Erickson taught me patience and Jeff Brown just makes it so easy for me to laugh and not take it so serious. Each of them has been special and unique amazing partners, and some fabulous program directors that have believed in me!
4. What is your most memorable on air moment?
I have 2. The first was when I was a board op back in the day and the Oakland Earthquake had just hit. I hit my first carted spot and it was from the American Will Kit. "If you have not yet done your will...now's the time." The second, and most touching, was at KFDI when we were able to team with the Airforce Honor Guard to provide the Flag Ceremony to widow whose husband served in Korea, but died right after 9/11. Due to security reasons, she never received her husband's flag. It was a truly humbling moment.
5. What is your favorite Morning Show feature and what makes it successful?
Mom and Dad's Video Review - It's my mom and dad, live, "reviewing" a video...although we never really get to that. They are usually too busy spilling family secrets. I've found out some reaaally juicy stuff in that bit. For example, my birthday is 9 months to the day of my dad's...you do the math. It's successful because everyone gets it. Everyone's parents are nuts and mine are just out there for everyone to enjoy.
6. Who do you look up to as a morning/air personality not at your station?
So Many!! I think Reesha at KFFM in Yakima is one of the best "unknowns" out there and it's just a matter of time. I've loved Jon Ballard (DC 101) for years. He's funny and smart. I grew up looking up to Shauna and Rita Wilde on KLOS, Robyn and Maynard and so many more. Thane Phalen at KRSE in Yakima is somebody I would put on any air staff. He's just an all around great utility guy.
7. If you were starting out in Radio today, but knew what you knew now, would you continue forward?
ABSOLUTELY! I just would have made Portland, Maine a stopover for lunch...too cold to stay there for too long!
8. If you could have any job outside the music business, what would it be?
I would be the proprietor of Stace's Bed & Breakfast. I'd have a cute Victorian Home and I'd spend all day baking my famous chocolate chip cookies. (That sounds sooo nice!!)
9. What's your favorite Passage of Scripture?
Luke 15:11-32, I'm a huge fan of the Parable of the Prodigal Son. It was the first Scripture I memorized, and I still love the story...true love and forgiveness.
10. What is your favorite quote?
"Keep reaching for the moon, the least you'll get is a star, and that in itself isn't half bad." -- My Mom in a letter she wrote to me the first time she heard me on the air.
